The ancient village of Cappella Vecchia brings the Nativity to life in the Giardini di Dedalo
The Cappella Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated events in the Christmas calendar of Monte di Procida, a small town overlooking the sea at the western tip of the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania. Every year, in the first days of January, the Cappella district marks the end of the holiday season with a popular performance that involves the entire neighborhood: families, children, artisans, and volunteers don costumes to revive a village from times past.
This is not a stage play with an audience seated in rows; here, visitors walk through the nativity scene itself, moving from alley to alley, stopping at a workbench, listening to a lullaby, or warming up with a glass of mulled wine. It is this immersive, participatory dimension that makes the event so beloved by locals and visitors arriving from Bacoli, Pozzuoli, and the entire Phlegraean area.
The performance takes place at the Giardini di Dedalo on Via Cappella, a large public green area that the Municipality of Monte di Procida reclaimed from an old abandoned quarry. The tuff stone walls, terraces, and hedges create a natural backdrop that perfectly suits the setting: caves become workshops, open spaces become squares, and the rock serves as a backdrop for the Nativity hut.
Surrounding the gardens is the ancient village of Cappella Vecchia, one of the historic cores of the local territory: a compact urban setting of low houses and courtyards that gives the route a sense of authenticity no built set could replicate.
The number is part of the event's identity: about eighty performers in period costumes animate the route throughout the evenings. Alongside the classic characters of the nativity, visitors encounter scenes of daily life from the past, reconstructed with real tools, objects, and gestures.
The performance is not silent: in recent editions, the route has been accompanied by local groups and musicians, including the Tersicore group, musician Peppe Cangiano, and the Militum Schola, who add a sonic and performative dimension to the nativity. The evening opening, after sunset, allows for creative lighting: torches, braziers, and warm lights give the village a completely different appearance than during the day.
As is the tradition of popular Campanian festivals, the culinary aspect is an integral part of the evening, not just a side attraction. Before and after the performances, visitors can taste mulled wine, fried pizzas, and local dishes prepared by the local women: simple, home-style cooking that tells the story of the Phlegraean Christmas better than any caption.
The living nativity is promoted by the Cappella Futura socio-cultural association, which for over a decade has handled the organization, costumes, and direction of the scenes, with the collaboration of the Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio Parish and the parish priest, Father Enrico Campisano. It is a community effort that begins months in advance and involves dozens of local volunteers.
The dates are fixed: January 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with doors open from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The timing close to Epiphany is intentional, following the liturgical calendar of the arrival of the Magi. Admission is free, making the visit accessible to everyone, including families with small children. Those in the area can easily combine the visit with a walk along the Monte di Procida viewpoint or the nearby Miliscola coastline.
After eleven years of performances, the Cappella Living Nativity returned to the Giardini di Dedalo in Monte di Procida for its twelfth edition, held on the evenings of January 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2026. The route once again wound through the ancient village of Cappella Vecchia, with doors open from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM and free admission.
As in previous editions, the performance combined religious, artistic, and culinary dimensions: actors and performers played the roles of the Nativity and scenes of daily village life, joined by local children and animals within the village spaces. The most anticipated final moment was the arrival of the Three Wise Men with their gifts, coinciding with the eve of Epiphany.
The 2026 edition was managed by the Cappella Futura Association in collaboration with the Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio Parish, led by Father Enrico Campisano. Before and after the performances, visitors were able to stop at the village refreshment points, featuring traditional local food products prepared by the local community volunteers.
The route is visited freely, without shifts or reservations: enter from the "98 Alloggi" area, along Via Cappella towards Miliscola.
