Wine, gnocco di tritello, and music in the historic center of Valmontone
Cantine a Varmondò takes its name from the local dialect term for Valmontone: Varmondò. For four days, spanning late May and early June, the historic center—from Piazza Umberto Pilozzi to the narrow streets climbing the hill—fills with long communal tables, food stalls, music, and the aroma of home cooking. This is no ordinary food festival; it is the town's identity celebration, built from the ground up by the 'cantine' (cellars), the neighborhood cultural associations that open their doors to cook for thousands of visitors.
The heart of the event lies in these 'cantine', groups of volunteers organized into associations that engage in friendly competition through traditional dishes and hospitality. The 2025 edition featured five: Jo Cainaro dejo Principe, Jo Sorecaro, 19 Jo M'Briaco, Le Otti, and Jo Foco e Braci della Fenice—names in dialect that perfectly capture the popular spirit of the festival. Each cellar offers its own signature dishes and local wines, turning the village into a sprawling enogastronomic itinerary.
The absolute star of the table is the gnocco di tritello, a traditional Valmontone peasant dish made from 'tritello' flour (a byproduct of wheat milling) and all-purpose flour, served with a sauce of tomato purée, garlic, anchovies, parsley, oil, and walnuts. A humble dish rich in history, it is recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product (PAT) of the Lazio region and is included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste. Tasting it during the festival, served directly by the cantine, is the most authentic way to experience Valmontone.
Every evening, the musical program accompanies the tastings: live concerts on central stages, street bands roaming the alleys, and performers animating the squares. Over the years, the festival has hosted various groups and guests from the Roman and national scene—in 2025, these included Kutso, Erre Sei, Andrea Perroni, and Greg & The Prigidaires—creating a festive atmosphere that lasts late into the night.
The event is also a perfect opportunity to discover Valmontone, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome, known to many for its amusement park and outlet mall, but also home to a historic center of great value, dominated by the 17th-century Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and the Collegiate Church of the Assumption. The festival brings the spotlight back to the ancient village, supported by the Municipality of Valmontone and the Cantine a Varmondò Committee.
Born as a local village feast, Cantine a Varmondò has grown with every edition. In 2025, it celebrated its tenth anniversary, and in 2026, it expanded to four days, from May 29th to June 1st, confirming itself—as noted by the local press—as a continuously evolving tradition and one of the most anticipated events in the Valmontone calendar, alongside the Snail Festival and the Sagra degli gnocchi a coda de soreca.
From May 29th to June 1st, 2026, the historic center of Valmontone hosted a new edition of Cantine a Varmondò, for the first time spanning four days. The local 'cantine' opened their food stalls offering gnocco di tritello—the traditional peasant dish of Valmontone included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste—alongside regional wines, while live concerts, street bands, and performers animated the village squares and alleys every evening.
The organizational team, coordinated by the Cantine a Varmondò Committee with the Municipality of Valmontone, provided free shuttles departing from the Todis supermarket on Via Casilina with stops at Via Sant'Antonio and Via Nova, operating from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM, with Sunday, May 31st, also open for lunch. After the event, Mayor Veronica Bernabei described it as 'a tradition that continues to grow,' confirmed by the large turnout reported by the local press.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Valmontone exit and follow signs for the historic center. By train: Valmontone station on the FL6 Rome-Cassino line, about 45 minutes from Rome Termini.
During the festival, the historic center is closed to traffic. Free shuttles operate from peripheral parking areas (in 2026, departing from the Todis supermarket on Via Casilina, with stops at Via Sant'Antonio and Via Nova) from approximately 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM.
Evening opening from approximately 7:00 PM until late; on Sunday, the festival is also open for lunch. Admission is free; dishes and tastings are available for purchase at the cantine stalls.
