An ancient song that heralds Easter

Cantando la Palma is one of the most cherished folk traditions in Castrocielo, a small town in southern Lazio nestled between the Liri Valley and the mountains of Ciociaria, in the province of Frosinone. Every year, on the weekend preceding Palm Sunday, the village comes alive with song: numerous choral groups gather to perform the 'palm song,' a traditional hymn of Marian devotion with deep historical roots, passed down by local families from generation to generation.

The origins of the tradition

The palm song belongs to the rural culture of Ciociaria and has always marked the beginning of Holy Week. Participants decorate a large olive branch with numerous colorful ornaments and, in groups, walk through the village streets singing in front of houses. It is a ritual of petition and well-wishing: those who welcome the singers reward them with sweets, gifts, and hospitality. The Pro Loco of Castrocielo, together with the Santa Lucia parish, has revitalized this custom by organizing the event, which now attracts choirs from neighboring towns as well.

How the festival unfolds

The event typically spans two days. On Saturday afternoon, the singing groups gather and parade to Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the village, where the blessing of the palms and Holy Mass take place. Afterward, the groups take turns performing for the public in a friendly showcase that highlights different interpretations of the ancient song. On Palm Sunday, the choirs return to the spotlight, wandering through the alleys and districts of the village, visiting homes and bringing their song directly to the families' doorsteps.
