The Alpini tradition in the heart of Valsesia: black feathers, brass bands, and local heritage
The Campertogno Alpini Group Festival is one of the most cherished events for the community of this mountain village in Valsesia, in the province of Vercelli. The Group, founded in 1933 on Easter Monday and named after the Alpino Adolfo Fornara, a silver medal recipient for military valor, celebrates its anniversary every year on Easter Monday, keeping alive a tradition that has accompanied village life for nearly a century.
The festival follows a ritual dear to Alpini culture and the Campertogno community. The highlight is the parade of the banners through the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and women in traditional Valsesian costumes, which lend the procession an ancient and evocative charm. The route concludes in front of the war memorial, where a laurel wreath is laid in memory of soldiers from all wars.
The event is not just a moment of reflection: it is also an occasion for celebration and conviviality that brings together Alpini, families, and friends from neighboring groups of the Valsesiana Section of the National Alpini Association. The traditional lunch that closes the day strengthens the bonds of a mountain community with a strong sense of identity, where the Alpini spirit of solidarity and service is translated year-round into concrete activities, such as trail maintenance and the organization of the 'Festa nel verde' for the Madonna del Callone.
Nestled along the Sermenza stream at the foot of Monte Rosa, Campertogno is one of the most characteristic villages in Valsesia, with its stone and timber houses, votive chapels, and the monumental parish church of San Giacomo Maggiore. Participating in the Alpini Group Festival means discovering an authentic corner of mountain Piedmont, where traditions are guarded with pride and passion from generation to generation.
