About Chestnut Festival

Every October, Calvanico, the highest village in the Irno Valley, fills with the aroma of roasted chestnuts for its historic Chestnut Festival. In Piazzale Europa, at the foot of Pizzo San Michele, food stalls open at dusk, offering traditional peasant dishes based on the Picentini PGI chestnut, accompanied by folk music, dancing, and local folklore. An authentic village festival that reached its 48th edition in 2025.

A historic festival at the foot of the Picentini Mountains

The Calvanico Chestnut Festival is one of the longest-running autumn events in the province of Salerno. In October 2025, it reached the milestone of its 48th edition, confirming a tradition that has accompanied the village for decades, pausing only during the pandemic years before returning with its usual enthusiasm. The heart of the festival is Piazzale Europa, the village's main square, which transforms into a large, convivial open-air space for four consecutive evenings.

The PGI chestnut, the absolute star

The undisputed queen of the event is the Picentini PGI chestnut: Calvanico is located within the production area of the Serino PGI chestnut, and its groves climb the wooded slopes at the foot of Pizzo San Michele. Alongside chestnuts, the area also produces hazelnuts from the Giffoni family, another iconic product of inland Campania.

At the festival stalls, the chestnut is showcased in all its forms: freshly roasted chestnuts, boiled chestnuts, traditional peasant-style first courses, artisanal desserts, and liqueurs, all paired with local wines. It is simple, mountain-style cuisine that tells the ancient story of the relationship between the village and its woods.

Food stalls, music, and folklore

The festival's formula is well-established: stalls generally open at 7:00 PM, and the evening continues late into the night with tastings, folk music, dancing, and live performances. In recent years, the program has featured folk and tarantella bands, DJ sets, local artists, and entertainment for families.

  • Four consecutive evenings of traditional gastronomy
  • Stalls set up in Piazzale Europa and the town center streets
  • Folk music, dancing, and live performances
  • Locally sourced products and handicrafts

Excursions, nature, and heritage

The festival is more than just a culinary event. Past editions have complemented the evenings in the square with guided hikes in the chestnut groves and along the trails leading up to Pizzo San Michele (1,567 meters), walks in the Frassineto nature oasis, visits to old mills, and the village's religious heritage sites, as well as creative workshops for children dedicated to chestnut processing. It is a way to discover the Picentini Mountains Regional Park during the season when the woods are at their most beautiful.

Calvanico, the highest village in the Irno Valley

With just over 1,400 inhabitants, Calvanico is a small town in the province of Salerno, in Campania, nestled at an altitude of about 500-600 meters. Surrounded by mountains on almost all sides, with Monte Mai (1,607 m) dominating the area, the village is known for its mixed deciduous forests, chestnut groves, and high-altitude beech forests, as well as its devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's patron saint. This setting makes the festival a different experience from coastal events: here, you can breathe in the atmosphere of the Salerno hinterland, amidst stone, wood, and lit fireplaces.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Calvanico Pro Loco with the support of the Municipal Administration, involving dozens of local volunteers who manage the cooking, setup, and hospitality. It is precisely this voluntary and community spirit that gives the event its genuine tone, far from more commercial festivals.

When it takes place

The event is traditionally set for the second weekend of October, when the chestnut harvest is in full swing: in 2025, the 48th edition took place from October 9th to 12th, and in 2024, the 47th edition was held from October 10th to 13th. The dates for the new edition are usually announced by the organizers in the preceding weeks via the festival's Facebook page and the Municipality's channels.

Chestnut Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Calvanico Chestnut Festival has not yet been officially announced. The event, organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality, is traditionally held in October during the harvest of the Picentini PGI chestnut. In 2025, it reached its 48th edition. Dates and programs are usually communicated in the weeks prior via the festival's Facebook page and the Municipality's channels.

At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Calvanico Chestnut Festival. However, it is a well-established event in the autumn calendar of the province of Salerno, which in recent editions has taken place over the second weekend of October for four consecutive evenings in Piazzale Europa.

As per tradition, the festival is expected to feature food stalls dedicated to the Picentini PGI chestnut, folk music, and opportunities to explore the chestnut groves and trails of the Picentini Mountains. We will update this page as soon as the Calvanico Pro Loco announces the calendar and program for the 2026 edition.
