A living nativity scene winding through the streets of a medieval village in the province of Agrigento
Caltabellotta City of the Nativity is the grand Christmas event that, every year between late December and early January, brings the historic center of Caltabellotta to life. This charming village is perched high in the mountains of the Agrigento province, in Sicily. The heart of the event is the Living Nativity, one of the oldest and most famous on the island, which stages the Nativity along the village's winding streets and alleys.
The ancient peasant cottages carved into the rock, the narrow alleys, and the stairways of the medieval historic center recreate the atmosphere of Bethlehem from two thousand years ago. Throughout the event, the village becomes an open-air stage, featuring illuminated streets, a spiritual atmosphere, traditional crafts, theater, music, and food tastings. Around sixty performers, including professional actors and local residents, bring the miracle of the Nativity to life along an itinerant route.
The event is presented as a theatrical performance of the Nativity: "The Nativity Spectacle - Theater, Music, and Tastings through the village streets." Along the route, visitors encounter scenes of daily life, traditional Sicilian music, the Opera dei Pupi (puppet theater), the sounds of bagpipes and ciaramiddrari (traditional pipers), and moments of itinerant theater that guide the visitor toward the scene of the Holy Family.
The theatrical route also includes four tastings of traditional local products, served at various stops along the nativity path:
Founded in the 1990s, the Living Nativity of Caltabellotta is considered one of the first living nativity scenes created in a Sicilian village and has established itself over the years as one of the most important Christmas events in the Agrigento area. The event, which attracts visitors from all over Sicily, combines the religious and spiritual dimension of Christmas with the promotion of the historical, landscape, and gastronomic heritage of the Municipality of Caltabellotta.
The 31st edition of the Living Nativity of Caltabellotta was held over four evenings: December 26 and 27, 2025, and January 4 and 5, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, along the narrow streets of the historic center.
The artistic program featured performances by Marcello Rimi, Lidia Fortunato, the Aromi di Sicilia Company, Cantu e Cuntu, and I Ciaramiddrari Siculianisi on December 26 and 27. On January 4 and 5, the Opera dei Pupi by Salvatore Oliveri with Totò Fundarò took the stage, alongside the Aromi di Sicilia Company, Cantu e Cuntu, and I Ciaramiddrari Siculianisi, with Marcello Rimi also performing on January 5.
The edition was organized by Futuris srls. The entrance coupon included the theatrical route and the four tastings of traditional products, with ticketing managed by the Le Vie dei Tesori circuit.
