Apulian wines, flavors, and culture in the historic center of Bisceglie
Some events capture the essence of a region better than any guidebook: Calici nel Borgo Antico is one of them. Created to showcase the charm of the historic center of Bisceglie—a town overlooking the Adriatic in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT), in Puglia—the event turns the squares, alleys, and courtyards of the medieval village into a vast open-air laboratory of taste. The white stones of the old town, Romanesque portals, and historic churches provide a natural backdrop for two evenings dedicated to wine, gastronomy, and music.
The heart of the festival lies in the tastings. Dozens of Apulian wineries and farms set up their stands along the route, offering a selection that spans the entire region: the full-bodied reds of the Salento like Primitivo and Negroamaro, the Nero di Troia of central Puglia, whites such as Fiano and Bombino Bianco, and the refined rosés that are a hallmark of the local winemaking tradition. Each glass is a small journey through appellations, grape varieties, and the stories of winemaking families.
Pairing with the wines are specialties of Apulian cuisine, prepared by local restaurateurs in collaboration with Assolocali: panzerotti, orecchiette with turnip tops, spaghetti all'assassina, and sandwiches with traditional brasciola. It is a culinary path designed to be enjoyed while strolling, glass in hand, from one stand to the next.
The evenings are enlivened by live music from bands and young local musicians, street performers, and guided tours of the historic center. One of the most evocative elements is the special evening opening of churches and museums: the public can discover churches, palaces, and cultural sites usually closed at night, in a successful blend of gastronomy and the rediscovery of Bisceglie's historical and artistic heritage.
Promoted by the Associazione Borgo Antico with the patronage of the Municipality of Bisceglie, the BAT Province, and the Puglia Region, the event now takes place twice a year: a Summer Edition in June and an autumn edition between October and November. This format accompanies Bisceglie through two different moments of the season, confirming Calici nel Borgo Antico as one of the most anticipated food and wine events on the Apulian coast.
The 2026 summer edition brought the Borgo Antico of Bisceglie to life on the evenings of June 26 and 27. Dozens of renowned Apulian wineries and farms offered high-quality white, rosé, and red wines for tasting, while local restaurateurs served panzerotti, orecchiette with turnip tops, spaghetti all'assassina, and sandwiches with brasciola. The public was accompanied by the music of local bands and young musicians, as well as guided tours of the historic center led by guide Irene Frisari, departing from 7:00 PM in Piazza Margherita di Savoia.
The main theme was "A Night at the Museum", with extended evening openings of the village's main cultural sites, combining the pleasure of wine with the rediscovery of Bisceglie's historical and artistic heritage.
