The Porto Santo Stefano wine festival, featuring top labels and Maremma flavors
For an entire weekend in May, Corso Umberto I in Porto Santo Stefano, the main village of the Monte Argentario municipality, becomes the oenological heart of coastal Tuscany. Overlooking the harbor and the moored boats, the town's elegant promenade hosts the Calici d'Argento Wine Festival, an event that highlights quality wine, traditional Maremma products, and the conviviality of a stroll among tasting stalls and sea breezes.
The program revolves around tasting stalls: over seventy wineries from all over Italy present their wines, ranging from small boutique producers to renowned labels. Ample space is dedicated to local producers, with the presence of Maremma consortia such as the Consorzio Vini DOC Bianco di Pitigliano e Sovana and the Consorzio del Morellino di Scansano. Alongside Italian excellence, there are international selections from France and Spain, as well as an area dedicated to spirits and gin for those looking to explore beyond a glass of wine.
The festival is more than just open tastings. In collaboration with the FISAR Colline Maremmane delegation, a series of masterclasses with limited seating are offered, featuring guided tastings paired with local gastronomy, led by sommeliers and industry experts. One of the most recent additions is the "Calice d'Argento – People's Choice" award: visitors can vote for their favorite winery via QR codes placed along the route, and the most-voted producer wins free entry to the following edition.
Complementing the wines is gourmet street food prepared by local restaurants on the Corso: the focus is on seafood dishes and traditional recipes, from fried fish to local specialties, in a continuous dialogue between kitchen and cellar. The evening atmosphere is completed by DJ sets and a relaxation area that accompanies the tastings until late at night, giving the event a relaxed and festive vibe.
Conceived and organized by the CCN Centro Storico Porto Santo Stefano, the Calici d'Argento Wine Festival is a recent but rapidly growing event, capable of enhancing the bond between the Argentario promontory, its harbor, and the great winemaking tradition of the Grosseto Maremma. For those visiting Monte Argentario, it represents an excellent opportunity to discover local wines and experience the village at its most vibrant, at the start of the summer season.
The 2026 edition, the second of the event, took place along Corso Umberto I in Porto Santo Stefano. Opening hours were Saturday, May 23 from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM and Sunday, May 24 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
The program featured over 70 wineries from all over Italy, with a space dedicated to wines from France and Spain and an area for spirits and gin. Among the local protagonists were the Bianco di Pitigliano e Sovana and Morellino di Scansano consortia.
Saturday, May 23: 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM - opening of tasting stalls (over 70 wineries), France and Spain wine area, spirits and gin, street food from local restaurants, FISAR Colline Maremmane masterclasses by reservation, evening DJ set.
Sunday, May 24: 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM - tastings, masterclasses, street food, and public voting for the "Calice d'Argento – People's Choice 2026" award.
The festival takes place along Corso Umberto I in Porto Santo Stefano, a village in the municipality of Monte Argentario (Province of Grosseto, Tuscany), on the last weekend of May.
By car: from the Aurelia (SS1) road, follow signs for Monte Argentario and Porto Santo Stefano. By train: Orbetello-Monte Argentario station on the Rome-Pisa line, then bus or taxi to the harbor. Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino and Pisa.
Access to tasting stalls is usually granted by purchasing a glass and a tasting kit on-site. Masterclasses have limited seating and require booking through the organizers' official channels. During the event days, the center is pedestrianized: it is advisable to park in areas outside the harbor. We recommend booking accommodation in advance, given the overlap with the start of the tourist season.
