The Italian capital of slow smoking in the heart of Montefeltro
In the heart of Montefeltro, along the ancient Flaminia road connecting Rome to the Marche region, the Municipality of Cagli (Province of Pesaro and Urbino) hosts one of the most unique events in the Marche calendar each year: the Pipe Festival. Organized by the Pipa Club Italia with the patronage of the Municipality of Cagli, the festival attracts enthusiasts and collectors from all over Italy and abroad to the Renaissance village, transforming the streets and squares of the historic center into a large open-air museum dedicated to the art of pipe smoking for an entire weekend.
At the center of the event is the large exhibition-market, where master pipe makers display their creations and talk about one of the oldest and most refined artisanal trades in the world. From working with briar wood to vulcanite, from methacrylate to the most sought-after finishes, each pipe is a small work of art. Alongside the exhibitors, there are practical workshops, conferences, and mini-masters dedicated to the history of Italian historic companies, processing techniques, and the culture of pipe tobacco.
The Pipe Festival is also a journey into the flavors of the region: tastings pair tobacco with typical Marche products such as Casciotta d'Urbino cheese, local honeys, mead, and craft beers. The "Tobacco Road" food and wine route involves bars and eateries in the center, while dinners in the square, accompanied by live music, bring exhibitors and visitors together in a convivial atmosphere.
The most anticipated moment is the International Trophy "Città di Cagli", a slow smoking competition where participants from all over the world compete to see who can keep their pipe lit the longest with the same amount of tobacco. A discipline that is both technical, requires concentration, and celebrates slow time, the true spirit of the event. On Sunday, awards are also given for "Tabaccaio Pipe Specialist" and the most beautiful shop window in the historic center.
More than just a fair, the Pipe Festival has become an identity event for Cagli over the years, capable of enhancing artistic craftsmanship, the village's architectural heritage, and the hospitality of the Marche region. An event worth visiting even for those who don't smoke but want to discover a tradition made of passion, culture, and beauty.
The 26th Cagli Pipe Festival (May 15-17, 2026), organized by Pipa Club Italia, confirmed its three-day thematic format that animated the historic center with exhibitors, master pipe makers, conferences, and exhibitions. The heart of the event was the large exhibition-market and the traditional 22nd International Slow Smoking Trophy "Città di Cagli", held on Sunday afternoon.
Cagli is located along the SS3 Flaminia, in the hinterland of the Province of Pesaro and Urbino. By car, take the Cagli exit from the Flaminia highway. By train, the nearest station is Fano, with a dedicated shuttle service to Cagli (booking required during the festival).
The Municipality provides several parking areas near the historic center, with charging stations for electric vehicles and reserved parking for people with disabilities.
Access to the exhibition-market and events in the historic center is free. For exhibitors, stands cost €50 + VAT (1 meter) or €100 + VAT (2 meters). Information and registration: [email protected], tel. +39 340 9335644.
