The spring festival of woodturning and wood carving in the Susa Valley
In Bussoleno, a small town in the Susa Valley in the province of Turin, woodworking is a tradition passed down through generations. Bussolegno โ officially titled "Bussolegnoโฆ of lathes, of gouges, and more" โ is the spring festival that brings dozens of master sculptors, turners, and carvers to the town's historic center each edition. For one day, the streets and squares become a sprawling workshop where visitors can observe Piedmontese craftsmanship up close: from ancient techniques to live demonstrations, showcasing the entire creative process from raw log to finished form.
The festival is promoted by the "Ferruccio Croce" School of Carving and Sculpture Cultural Association, founded in the early 1980s with the support of the municipal administration, which provided space in the basement of the Town Hall. The School aims to promote, disseminate, and pass on the artistic and craft traditions of wood carving and sculpture according to valley and regional customs, organizing annual evening courses in sculpture and woodturning. Bussolegno serves as the public showcase for this patient work, held under the patronage of the Municipality of Bussoleno and the Susa Valley Mountain Union.
Over the years, Bussolegno has established itself as one of the most cherished events in the Susa Valley's spring calendar, traditionally held on the first Sunday of May. The event combines a passion for woodworking with the discovery of the historic center of Bussoleno, the main town of the Susa Valley, offering residents and visitors a day that blends craftsmanship, culture, music, and local flavors.
The 17th edition of Bussolegno took place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in the historic center of Bussoleno, marking the relaunch of the event after the cancellation of the 2024 edition. The theme of the event was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the birth of the Italian Republic, which served as the focus for the sculpture competition. The day brought together dozens of master sculptors from all over Piedmont in a creative challenge followed by the public throughout the day.
The event, organized by the "Ferruccio Croce" School of Carving and Sculpture with the patronage of the Municipality of Bussoleno and the Susa Valley Mountain Union, enlivened Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, Via Walter Fontan, the Market Square, and the spaces around Casa Aschieris.
The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from early morning until evening, following the tradition of the first Sunday in May.
Historic center of Bussoleno (Metropolitan City of Turin), between Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, Via Walter Fontan, the Market Square, and the areas adjacent to Casa Aschieris.
Bussoleno is located in the Susa Valley, about 48 km from Turin. It is accessible by car via the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway and by train: the Bussoleno station is a major railway hub in the valley, served by regional connections to and from Turin.
The event takes place in the public spaces of the historic center. For rates and any organizational details, it is recommended to consult the "Ferruccio Croce" School of Carving and Sculpture and the Municipality of Bussoleno.
