In the heart of the Abruzzo hinterland, where the Tirino River forms some of the clearest waters in Italy before flowing into the Pescara, the municipality of Bussi sul Tirino celebrates its annual Carnival. It is an authentic local festival, organized by the local Pro Loco and the municipal administration, bringing together families, children, and local associations for a day of parades, costumes, and joy along the streets of the historic center.

Allegorical floats and costumes

The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats, created by local groups and associations, which wind through the town streets accompanied by confetti, music, and entertainment. The participation of children in costume gives the day a popular and familiar character, typical of the carnivals in the Abruzzo villages of the Pescara province.

A Carnival with a message

Bussi sul Tirino has chosen to give its festival an educational dimension. In the 2026 edition, the event featured an allegorical float titled Plastic Free, created at the request of the municipal administration with the contribution of the Plastic Free Onlus association. At the center of the float was a large plastic-eating fish, a symbol of the thousands of marine species that mistake plastic fragments for food every year. During the event, information materials on the impact of plastic pollution on humans and nature were distributed, with the goal of strengthening awareness, especially among the new generations.

This commitment is part of an environmental path that led Bussi sul Tirino to be awarded in Rome, at the Teatro Olimpico, during the national ceremony of "Plastic Free Municipalities," receiving the highest recognition of three turtles and contributing to making Abruzzo the most virtuous region in Italy.

A village to discover

The Carnival is also an opportunity to discover Bussi sul Tirino, a village in the Province of Pescara known for its ancient historic center, the medieval bridge, and the springs of the Tirino, a destination for canoeists and nature lovers. The festival, free and open to all, combines the Abruzzo carnival tradition with a focus on the territory and the environment.
