The widespread ceramics festival in the city of terracotta whistles
Every year at the end of May, Rutigliano joins Buongiorno Ceramica, the major widespread festival promoted by the Italian Association of Ceramics Cities (AiCC), which involves about sixty Italian municipalities, from Castellamonte to Caltagirone. In this town in the province of Bari, Puglia, the initiative takes on a special meaning: Rutigliano is one of the historic capitals of clay craftsmanship and the recognized home of the terracotta whistle, a small votive object and lucky charm that has become a symbol of the city's identity.
For the occasion, the historic center comes alive with widespread displays: works in terracotta, clay, and artistic ceramics are scattered throughout alleys, courtyards, and squares, turning the old town into a continuous exhibition trail. The Rutigliano potters symbolically open their workshops to showcase their craft, while at least one artisan works at the wheel live, allowing visitors to witness the birth of an artifact from the master's hands.
The heart of the event is the civic museum network, which opens for special visits: the "Grazia e Pietro Di Donna" Civic Archaeological Museum, the "Domenico Divella" Terracotta Whistle Museum, Palazzo Settanni – MUDIAS, the Galloforie Open-Air Museum, which winds its majestic terracotta artifacts through the city streets, and the Urban Center. Through guided tours, workshops for adults and children, exhibitions, and meetings, the public is invited to discover the secrets of local ceramics by learning, experimenting, and having fun.
Buongiorno Ceramica is not just an exhibition: it is an invitation to experience an ancient art that has been passed down from generation to generation in Rutigliano. The event weaves together culture, tourism, and craftsmanship, enhancing the municipality's identity and projecting it into the national circuit of Ceramics Cities. For families, enthusiasts, and the curious, it is the ideal opportunity to spend a spring weekend dedicated to clay, amidst the scents of the Puglian village and the magic of the potter's wheel.
For the twelfth national edition, Rutigliano offered a widespread program of initiatives including open museums, workshops, exhibitions, installations, and meetings, involving the historic center and the city's main cultural venues. The initiative was promoted by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Rutigliano, with Mayor Giuseppe Valenzano and Councilor Milena Palumbo emphasizing the role of culture as a tool for identity, participation, and local development.
The protagonists of the 2026 edition were the "Grazia e Pietro Di Donna" Civic Archaeological Museum, the "Domenico Divella" Terracotta Whistle Museum, Palazzo Settanni – MUDIAS, the Galloforie Open-Air Museum, and the Urban Center.
