The ancient village of Chiusano turns into Bethlehem on Epiphany Eve

Every year, in the heart of the Christmas season, the Borgo Ripa in Chiusano di San Domenico, a small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, transforms into an authentic Bethlehem of yesteryear. The ancient district, recently restored to its original appearance, becomes the natural stage for a performance that involves costumed actors and the entire local community.
The route winds through stone houses, arches, and the village's sloping alleys. Visitors are not mere spectators: they walk through the scenes, pause before workshops and open fires, and finally reach the heart of the old village to pay homage to the Nativity stable.
The central theme of the event is the revival of the rural and artisan memory of Irpinia. Along the way, traditional crafts come to life, reconstructed with authentic tools and gestures:
Each station tells a fragment of daily life from the pre-modern village, offering a concrete image of how people lived and worked in the hills of inland Campania.
Visitors are accompanied by roaming music that marks the journey between scenes. The route alternates ancient crafts with small tastings: the tavern and the cellar are the most anticipated stops, where one can sample typical Irpinian products in a convivial atmosphere. This is one of the hallmarks of this living nativity: the meeting between the spiritual dimension of the Nativity story and local gastronomic culture.
The highlight is tied to the date chosen for the event, January 6th. In the evening, after the route opens, the re-enactment of the arrival of the Three Wise Men takes place, ideally closing the Christmas holiday cycle and drawing crowds from neighboring towns to the stable. This is the moment that gives the most meaning to the choice of date: not a December nativity, but an Epiphany nativity.
Chiusano di San Domenico stands at an altitude of about 700 meters in the Picentini Mountains Regional Park, a short distance from the provincial capital, Avellino. With just over two thousand inhabitants, the town preserves a historic urban layout, of which Borgo Ripa is one of the most characteristic corners. The living nativity is now one of the events that best expresses the identity of this part of Irpinia, alongside other local religious traditions like the Living Stations of the Cross during Holy Week.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Piero De Napoli of Chiusano di San Domenico, with the patronage of the Municipality of Chiusano di San Domenico. The project relies on volunteers and the participation of residents who prepare costumes, set up scenes, and play the characters every year. A collective effort that makes the living nativity not just an attraction for visitors, but also an opportunity for cohesion for a community that experiences its village with particular intensity during the winter.
For the 2026 edition of the Borgo Ripa Living Nativity, no official announcements have been found: neither dates nor the program have been released by the organizers. This entry therefore reflects the usual timing of the event, which in documented editions has taken place on January 6th, on the occasion of Epiphany, in the ancient village of Chiusano di San Domenico, in the province of Avellino.
Those wishing to attend are invited to follow the updates from the Pro Loco Piero De Napoli and the Municipality of Chiusano di San Domenico, which typically publish information in the weeks preceding the Christmas holidays.
Chiusano di San Domenico is located in the province of Avellino, Campania, about twenty kilometers from the capital. By car, it is best to take the Avellino Est exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway and continue along the provincial roads towards the Calore Valley. Borgo Ripa is in the town center: during the event, it is advisable to leave your car along the main roads and continue on foot.
In documented editions, the route has opened in the late afternoon, around 6:00 PM, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men at 9:00 PM. No admission fee has been reported. It is recommended to check dates, times, and access details on the channels of the Pro Loco Piero De Napoli and the Municipality before traveling.
The village is at an altitude of about 700 meters, and January evenings can be very cold: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are essential, as the route is entirely outdoors on cobblestones and sloping alleys. The event is suitable for families and children, who find the ancient craft workshops the most engaging part.
