The widespread festival of small Sicilian villages arrives in Alessandria della Rocca
The Borghi dei Tesori Fest is the branch dedicated to small towns of the renowned Le Vie dei Tesori event, organized by the foundation of the same name. Over several weekends in May, dozens of Sicilian villages open churches, palaces, hermitages, convents, and natural sites—usually closed or rarely accessible—to the public, accompanying visits with walks, experiences, workshops, and tastings. Among these villages is Alessandria della Rocca, a town in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily.
Founded in the second half of the 16th century under the name Alessandria della Pietra, the town preserves an ancient urban layout, crossed by the historic Via Barresi and its crossroads that divide the town into districts. The spiritual heart of the village is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca, linked to the legend of the apparition to a young girl named Angelina and a destination for deeply rooted local devotion.
The tour route also includes the Carmelite complex, one of the oldest in the town, embellished with Serpotta-style stuccoes, and the evocative ruins of the Pietra d'Amico castle with its ancient tower, a testament to the feudal past of the Sicani Mountains.
In addition to guided tours, the festival in Alessandria della Rocca offers sensory experiences designed to help visitors discover the territory:
The Agrigento village is part of a wider circuit that, on the same weekend, involves the nearby towns of Burgio and Caltabellotta, also rich in churches, hermitages, and ancient crafts, creating a widespread itinerary among the treasures of the Sicani Mountains.
The event is based on the coupon system of the Le Vie dei Tesori Foundation: with a single multi-visit formula, you can discover the various places on the circuit, while walks, experiences, and tastings require a dedicated reservation. A formula that has made the festival a highly anticipated event for slow and cultural tourism in Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Borghi dei Tesori Fest, the sixth of the event, took place over three weekends in May, involving 25 villages in Sicily. Alessandria della Rocca was among the protagonists of the first weekend, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, along with other small towns in the Sicani Mountains such as Burgio and Caltabellotta.
In the Agrigento village, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca, the Carmelite complex with its Serpotta-style stuccoes, and the ruins of the Pietra d'Amico castle with its ancient tower were opened. The visits were accompanied by an olfactory walk through the oregano fields, a saffron workshop, and tastings of herbal teas, sweets, and pane cunzatu.
Alessandria della Rocca (province of Agrigento, Sicily), Sicani Mountains. Main reference point: the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca, in the center of the village.
By car from Agrigento or Palermo along the inland roads of the Sicani Mountains; the village is reachable from the main arteries of central-western Sicily. A car is recommended, given the inland location of the town.
Access to the sites is via the Le Vie dei Tesori coupons (multi-visit and single-visit formulas). For walks, experiences, and tastings, a dedicated reservation is required. Coupons and information are available at leviedeitesori.com and at the village info-points.
