The propitiatory fire that announces spring in Montiano
The Bonfire of Saint Joseph is one of the most cherished fire festivals in Romagna and takes place every year on the evening of March 18th in Montiano, a small hillside town in the Province of Forlรฌ-Cesena, in Emilia-Romagna. Around the large bonfire lit in Piazza Maggiore, along via Clementina Mandolesi, an ancient and deeply popular rite is renewed: bidding farewell to winter and propitiating the arrival of spring and the good agricultural season.
The focarine (or fogheracce) of Saint Joseph have their roots in very ancient peasant customs, linked to the propitiatory fire that in the Romagna countryside announced the rebirth of the earth. In Montiano, after being passed down since the eighties, the festival was revived and relaunched by the Pro Loco of Montiano starting in 2006, becoming an eagerly awaited event for the entire community and families in the Cesena area.
The day opens in the afternoon with the Focarina Trek, a circular walking excursion organized in collaboration with Caveja Trek, to discover the origins of the Focarina and other Romagna traditions (starting in the late afternoon, booking recommended). In the evening, the village comes alive:
The heart of the festival is the food stand managed by Pro Loco volunteers, where you can taste traditional Romagna dishes: piadina filled with specially prepared sausage, mixed cured meats, and French fries. In recent years, the Focarina has attracted between 300 and 500 people to Montiano, confirming itself as a moment of gathering that combines taste, music, and folklore.
Participating in the Bonfire of Saint Joseph means experiencing an authentic page of Romagna's popular culture, amidst the warmth of the fire, the spectacle of the flag-wavers, and the genuine flavors of the Cesena hills. An opportunity to discover Montiano and Emilia-Romagna off the beaten tourist paths, at the symbolic moment when spring returns to warm the countryside.
For 2026, the Focarina di San Giuseppe in Montiano celebrated its 19th edition on Wednesday, March 18th, in Piazza Maggiore. The day began in the afternoon with the Focarina Trek in collaboration with Caveja Trek, a circular route to discover the origins of the festival and Romagna traditions.
In the evening, from 7:00 PM, the food stand opened with piadina, sausage, cured meats, and French fries; from 7:30 PM, music with the DJ animated the square, while at 9:00 PM, the historical group Brunoro II from the Pro Loco of Forlimpopoli performed with drummers and flag-wavers around the bonfire. The festival, part of the rich calendar of focarine in the Cesena area (Gambettola, Montegelli, Longiano), confirmed the Montiano community's attachment to this spring rite.
The Bonfire of Saint Joseph is held on the evening of March 18th in Piazza Maggiore, along via Clementina Mandolesi, in Montiano (FC). The food stand opens at 7:00 PM.
By car: Montiano is reached from the SS9 Via Emilia or the E45, located in a hilly position between Cesena and the sea. By train: the nearest station is Cesena, on the Bologna-Rimini line, from which you can continue by car or local transport.
Entry to the festival is free; food and drinks are paid for at the food stand. Booking is recommended for the Focarina Trek. Information from the Pro Loco of Montiano (tel. 348 7391863, [email protected]).
As this is an evening outdoor event in March, warm clothing is recommended. In case of bad weather, the event may be postponed: check for updates on the Pro Loco's social media channels.
