A parade of floats and masks along the lakeside, the heart of the Ferragosto celebrations in Bolsena

In Bolsena, a village nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Bolsena in the province of Viterbo (Lazio), Carnival doesn't wait for winterโit's celebrated in the peak of summer. The Summer Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of the tourist season, featured in the rich program of the Ferragosto week, when the town fills with residents and holidaymakers drawn to the largest volcanic lake in Europe.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups, which travels along the entire lakefront of Bolsena. The floats, carefully crafted by local groups and associations, advance through the crowd in a triumph of colors, choreography, and masked performers, making for one of the liveliest evenings of the entire Bolsena summer. The lakeside promenade, with the backdrop of the water and the medieval historic center, offers a picturesque setting for this street festival.
At the end of the parade, the party moves to Piazza Dante Alighieri, where a DJ set energizes the night and transforms the center into a large open-air dance floor. During the event, the trophy for the best costumed group is awarded, rewarding the creativity, joy, and attention to detail of the participants' costumes. It is a heartfelt moment that renews the playful and communal spirit of Carnival every year.
The Bolsena Summer Carnival is a free, open-air event designed for a wide and diverse audience: families with children, young people, and tourists who flock to the lakefront in August. It is part of the summer calendar of the Municipality of Bolsena, which also hosts other events in August, such as the Notte Bianca, enlivening the village throughout the Ferragosto week.
Hosting a carnival on the shores of Lake Bolsena means blending folklore and landscape: the village, famous for the Eucharistic Miracle and its Monaldeschi Castle, stretches between medieval alleys and the lakeside promenade. The summer parade is an opportunity to experience Bolsena in its most festive guise, amidst popular traditions, local gastronomy, and the cool evening breeze of the lake, in the heart of the Tuscia Viterbese region.
The 2026 edition of the Bolsena Summer Carnival is expected, as per tradition, during the Ferragosto week on the shores of Lake Bolsena. The program includes the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups and the dance evening with a DJ set in Piazza Dante Alighieri. The official date and full program have not yet been released by the Municipality of Bolsena: it is recommended to check for updates on the official channels of the Municipality and the tourist office before the event.
By car: Bolsena is served by the Via Cassia (SS2), about 36 km from Viterbo and 10 km from Montefiascone. From the A1 motorway, take the Orvieto exit and continue towards the lake. By train: the nearest station is Orvieto (Rome-Florence line), then take a Cotral bus to Bolsena.
The parade animates the Bolsena lakefront; the final dance party is held in Piazza Dante Alighieri, in the town center.
Free, open-air event. In August, it is advisable to book accommodation in advance due to the high tourist season on the lake.
