The Bolsena Ricama International Embroidery and Lace Biennial is one of the most original events in northern Lazio. Every two years, at the beginning of September, the historic center of Bolsena, overlooking the lake of the same name in the province of Viterbo, transforms into an authentic open-air museum: noble palaces, churches, workshops, and courtyards host the works of schools, associations, and master artisans from all over Italy and various European countries.
The history of the Biennial dates back to 1995, when Professor Maria Vittoria Ovidi conceived the "Pizzi a Palazzo" (Lace at the Palace) exhibition, created to promote the textile heritage and the Bolsena Embroidery School. From that intuition, a biennial event has grown that has gained international reach over the years, attracting enthusiasts, collectors, and scholars of the art of embroidery and lace.
The format is that of a widespread exhibition: visitors walk through the town following an itinerary that touches the municipal auditorium, the tourist office, the halls of the Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament palace in front of the Basilica of Santa Cristina, the Cavour exhibition hall, and, in some editions, spaces that are usually inaccessible, such as the small private chapel of Palazzo Torsilli.
The heart of the Biennial is the transmission of ancient knowledge: embroidery and lace are presented not as simple ornaments, but as true works of art where tradition engages with new creative interpretations. Each edition revolves around a theme that guides the competition and exhibitions, inviting participants to reinterpret motifs and symbols of popular and Christian culture.
Organized by the Associazione Bolsena Ricama with the support of the Municipality of Bolsena, the event is also an opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the Tuscia region. The historic center, dominated by the Rocca Monaldeschi and the Basilica of Santa Cristina, overlooks the largest volcanic lake in Europe, an ideal destination for a weekend in early September combining art, history, and nature in the heart of Lazio.
Bolsena is located on the Via Cassia (SS2), about 35 km from Viterbo and 40 km from Orvieto. By car from the A1 motorway, take the Orvieto exit and continue towards the lake. The nearest train station is Orvieto, which is connected to Bolsena by Cotral bus lines.
The event is held biennially at the beginning of September along a widespread route in the historic center of Bolsena. Admission to the exhibitions is generally free.
