The San Rocco Luminata in Capodimonte

In the village of Capodimonte, in the province of Viterbo, perched on a promontory jutting out into the waters of Lake Bolsena, Ferragosto coincides with one of the most heartfelt festivals of the year: the San Rocco Luminata, featuring the traditional torchlight procession and a grand fireworks display over the lake. San Rocco is a co-patron of the town, venerated alongside Saint Sebastian, and the celebrations in his honor transform the historic center into a stage of light and popular devotion every August 15th and 16th.

The torchlight procession

On the eve of the feast, August 15th, the Luminata takes place: a solemn procession named after the torches and Bengal lights lit on the balconies of houses along the route. The parade starts from the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, located in the heart of the historic center next to the Rocca Farnese, and descends to the church of San Rocco, situated just a few steps from the southwestern shore of the lake. The reflection of the flames and glows on the water creates a unique atmosphere that attracts residents and visitors every year.

Fireworks over Lake Bolsena

The most anticipated moment is the fireworks display that, late in the evening, illuminates the waters of Lake Bolsena in front of Capodimonte. Considered among the most beautiful in the entire area, the fireworks reflect on the surface of the lake and are visible from the entire lakeside promenade or directly from boats. The pyrotechnic choreography is the highlight of the Ferragosto festivities and is one of the symbols of summer on the lake.

The patronal feast of August 16th

The following day, August 16th, marks the liturgical feast of San Rocco. The celebrations continue with a solemn procession accompanied by the Sbandieratori e Musici di Bolsena (Flag-wavers and Musicians of Bolsena), which travels through the village streets decorated with artistic floral arrangements. Religious devotion thus intertwines with folklore and the popular traditions of the Tuscia region, in a festival that unites the entire community.
