About Bocconcino Festival

In Altavilla Silentina, a hilltop village in the province of Salerno overlooking the Piana del Sele, the Bocconcino Festival has been celebrating for over thirty years the small, fresh buffalo milk cheese that serves as the gastronomic symbol of this corner of Campania. In August 2025, the event reached its 33rd edition, combining open-air dining with the 'Moda sotto le Stelle' (Fashion under the Stars) competition: a midsummer evening that draws visitors from across the Sele Valley and confirms its status as one of the longest-running festivals in the Salerno area.

The bocconcino, a small symbol of the Piana del Sele

The Bocconcino Festival in Altavilla Silentina is one of the longest-running summer festivals in the province of Salerno. In August 2025, it reached its 33rd edition, a milestone that speaks volumes about how deeply rooted this event is in the life of the town. At the heart of the festival is the bocconcino, the smallest form of buffalo mozzarella produced in the dairies of the Piana del Sele: just a few grams of pure white stretched-curd cheese, meant to be eaten fresh within hours, which here represents not just a product, but a precise cultural and productive identity.

This is not a commercial fair or an event built for passing tourists; it is a community celebration where tasting stalls, open-air tables, and the atmosphere of mid-August evenings provide the setting for the product to be shared and appreciated. The audience comes primarily from the neighboring towns of the Sele and Calore valleys, and the evening always serves as a reunion for those who have returned to the village for their summer holidays.

Altavilla Silentina, between plains and hills

The Municipality of Altavilla Silentina has about seven thousand inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 319 meters in the province of Salerno, Campania. It sits in a strategic position between the irrigated plains of the Sele and the first hills of the Cilento, nestled between the Sele and Calore Lucano rivers. The historic center preserves its medieval layout: the Sant'Egidio church, of Norman origin and dedicated to the patron saint celebrated on September 1st; the 15th-century San Francesco convent; and the San Biagio church, featuring works by Nicola Peccheneda. The municipality includes the hamlets of Borgo Carillia, Cerrelli, Scalareta, and Cerrocupo.

It is a territory with a dual vocation: down in the plains, the buffalo, the dairies, and the mozzarella that have made the Piana del Sele famous; up in the hills, the olive groves, arable land, and a panorama that, on clear days, reaches as far as the Gulf of Salerno. The Bocconcino Festival was born exactly at the crossroads of these two worlds and is arguably the most direct and sincere way to understand the cuisine of this part of the province.

«Moda sotto le Stelle»

Alongside the gastronomic offerings, for several years the festival has hosted a spectacle that has become its hallmark: the «Moda sotto le Stelle» (Fashion under the Stars) competition. In the 2025 edition, the runway set up in Altavilla Silentina served as the regional final for the national «A new star Italia di miss e mister baby» contest: twenty children aged 4 to 13 competed, arriving from all over the province of Salerno—from Eboli to Battipaglia, from Montecorvino Pugliano to Campagna—alongside categories for ages 14 to 24 with the titles «New Star Italia», «Miss Cinema», and «Miss Moda». The evening was hosted by Emilio Cicalese, with organization by Gennaro Melella (GM Management).

It is an ingredient that perfectly explains the spirit of the event: the festival goes beyond just the food, becoming a village evening with a full square, families sitting out late, and a program that brings different generations together.

The 2026 edition

As of today, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Bocconcino Festival. Based on recent years, the event is expected in the second half of August, but confirmation can only come from the organizers' announcements and the official channels of the Municipality of Altavilla Silentina; it is therefore advisable to check before traveling. The detailed program, including evenings, guests, and stand opening hours, is usually released only a few weeks before the event.

Why it's worth it

  • A product best tasted where it is born: the buffalo bocconcino of the Piana del Sele, fresh from the day.
  • A festival with over thirty editions behind it, managed by local associations and not yet homogenized by mass tourism.
  • The medieval village of Altavilla Silentina, with the Norman church of Sant'Egidio, just a short walk from the festival area.
  • An ideal location to combine a visit to the temples of Paestum, the Cilento coast, and the dairies of the plains.

Bocconcino Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Bocconcino Festival in Altavilla Silentina has not yet been officially announced. Following the 33rd edition on August 17, 2025, a new event is expected in the heart of summer, but as of today, neither dates nor a program have been published. The date indicated in this file is therefore provisional: definitive information will come from the organizers and the Municipality's channels.

Edition yet to be announced

The Bocconcino Festival is a well-established event in Altavilla Silentina, in the province of Salerno, but no official date has been published for 2026. In recent years, the festival has been held in the second half of August, coinciding with the Ferragosto period: it is reasonable to expect the same timing, though this is not a confirmation.

The detailed program — evenings, shows, stand opening hours, and tasting prices — is usually released a few weeks before the event through the local press and the organizers' social media channels. Those wishing to participate should verify the confirmation before traveling.

Practical information — Bocconcino Festival

How to get there

By car: From the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the exit for Campagna or Eboli and continue on the provincial roads towards Altavilla Silentina (about twenty minutes). Those arriving from the south can use the state road that climbs the Calore valley.

By train: The reference station is Battipaglia, an important hub on the Tyrrhenian line, about 20 km away; from there, continue by bus or taxi. In summer, evening public transport connections are limited: it is better to plan for a car.

By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano) is about 30 km away; Naples-Capodichino Airport is about 90 km away.

Prices

No price list has been released for the 2026 edition. As with most festivals in the area, access to the festival area is usually free, and you only pay for what you consume at the stands, with portions and tastings at popular prices.

Tips

Festivals in the Piana del Sele come alive after sunset: arriving around 8:00 PM allows you to find parking near the center and dine without too much waiting. The bocconcino should be eaten as soon as it is served, at room temperature and not cold from the refrigerator. It is worth adding half a day to explore the historic village, the dairies of the plains, and a stop at Paestum, just over twenty kilometers away.

Where to stay

The most numerous options are found along the coast between Battipaglia, Eboli, and Capaccio-Paestum; in Altavilla Silentina and its hamlets, there are agritourisms and bed and breakfasts, which should be booked in advance for the week of Ferragosto.
