Rye black bread baked in the traditional Champorcher oven
In Champorcher, a municipality in the Aosta Valley overlooking the Mont Avic Natural Park, 'pan ner' (black bread) is more than just food: it's a symbol of Alpine culture. It is made from a dough of wheat flour and rye flour, with rye present for at least 60%, sometimes enriched with chestnuts, caraway seeds, and dried fruit. Traditionally, it was baked only once a year in the village's communal ovens to ensure supplies for the entire winter.
The Black Bread Festival is held every August in the hamlet of Chardonney, in the square by the cable car station. The day is marked by two main events:
Alongside the gastronomic offerings, the festival features a colourful craft market and moments of music and conviviality. It's an opportunity to discover the authentic flavours of a mountain valley and to experience the atmosphere of a community that keeps its roots alive.
The black bread festival has been held in Chardonney for decades—historically since the 1970s—and is organised by Pro Loco Champorcher. For fans of Alpine traditions, Champorcher is also a stop on the major cross-border festival 'Lo Pan Ner', which in October fires up the ovens of over fifty Aosta Valley municipalities.
The 2026 edition of the Black Bread Festival is scheduled, as every year, for August in the hamlet of Chardonney, Champorcher. The event will reprise the traditional format: distribution of freshly baked rye black bread, rolls, and sweets in the morning, and a tasting of typical Aosta Valley dishes in the evening, accompanied by a craft market.
The programme and the precise date for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Champorcher closer to the event. The usual structure of the day includes:
