About Black Bread Festival

Every August, the hamlet of Chardonney in Champorcher celebrates 'pan ner', the rye black bread that is one of the oldest specialities of the Aosta Valley. The Black Bread Festival combines the morning distribution of freshly baked bread, rolls, and sweets with an evening tasting of typical dishes in Chardonney square. A day that tells the story of Alpine bread culture, organised by Pro Loco Champorcher at the foot of Mont Avic.

Black Bread, a Centuries-Old Alpine Tradition

In Champorcher, a municipality in the Aosta Valley overlooking the Mont Avic Natural Park, 'pan ner' (black bread) is more than just food: it's a symbol of Alpine culture. It is made from a dough of wheat flour and rye flour, with rye present for at least 60%, sometimes enriched with chestnuts, caraway seeds, and dried fruit. Traditionally, it was baked only once a year in the village's communal ovens to ensure supplies for the entire winter.

The Festival in Chardonney

The Black Bread Festival is held every August in the hamlet of Chardonney, in the square by the cable car station. The day is marked by two main events:

  • Morning (10:30 AM): Distribution of rolls, sweets, and freshly baked black bread
  • Evening (6:30 PM): Tasting of typical Aosta Valley dishes

Alongside the gastronomic offerings, the festival features a colourful craft market and moments of music and conviviality. It's an opportunity to discover the authentic flavours of a mountain valley and to experience the atmosphere of a community that keeps its roots alive.

A Story Spanning Decades

The black bread festival has been held in Chardonney for decades—historically since the 1970s—and is organised by Pro Loco Champorcher. For fans of Alpine traditions, Champorcher is also a stop on the major cross-border festival 'Lo Pan Ner', which in October fires up the ovens of over fifty Aosta Valley municipalities.

Black Bread Festival — edition 2026
