Floats and masked groups through the historic streets of Bivona

The Bivona Carnival is one of the most beloved events in Bivona, a small town of just under 4,000 inhabitants nestled in the Sicani Mountains, in the upper Magazzolo river valley, in the province of Agrigento (Sicily). For a few days between February and March, the village's historic center transforms into an open-air stage: allegorical floats, masked groups, and plenty of music enliven the streets and squares in a celebration that involves the entire community.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, built by local groups who choose a theme each year and transform it into papier-mรขchรฉ sets, colors, and satire. Alongside the floats, masked groups perform small musical shows and choreographies. A long-standing tradition includes a real competition with prizes: the groups present their performances, and a jury awards the best ones. There are also moments designed for children, with entertainment and activities dedicated to the little ones.
The Bivona Carnival is rooted in local popular culture and is renewed year after year thanks to the commitment of local associations, groups, and volunteers. In Bivona, the passion for folklore is alive all year round: in 1996, the "Bivona folk" group was founded, performing in traditional Sicilian costumes with folk music and dances during village festivals. This deep connection is also felt during the Carnival, a celebration that weaves together fun, satire, and community identity.
Visiting Bivona during the Carnival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Agrigento hinterland. The town, known for its Peach Festival and devotion to Saint Rosalia, the patron saint celebrated on September 4th, preserves a cozy and welcoming historic center. The Sicily of the Sicani Mountains, far from mass tourism routes, offers hilly landscapes, genuine traditions, and a gastronomy with a strong character: the Carnival is the perfect time to immerse yourself in this atmosphere of popular celebration.
