The Bitonto Opera Festival is one of the most well-established opera series in Puglia. Every summer, it takes the great operatic repertoire out of traditional theaters and into the most atmospheric corners of Bitonto's historic center—a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, famous for its Romanesque Cathedral and premium extra virgin olive oil. Cloisters, Baroque courtyards, and monumental atriums become open-air stages where the music of Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart meets ancient stone and the summer sky.

In 2026, the festival reaches the milestone of its twenty-third edition. Organized by the cultural association La Macina APS under the artistic direction of Maestro Carlo Antonio De Lucia, the edition is entirely devoted to Giuseppe Verdi. The most anticipated event is Rigoletto, scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, in the Cloister of the Sacro Cuore Institute: beneath the historic arches, the court jester's cry for vengeance, Gilda's innocent love, and the Duke of Mantua's carefree cynicism come to life in a production that blends grand music with a monumental setting.

The Bitonto Opera Festival is not limited to summer evenings alone. The 2026 season opened in the spring with Verdi's Falstaff, performed on March 31 at the Teatro Traetta with a special matinée dedicated to secondary school students—a project that weaves together performance, training, and music education, involving hundreds of local youths.
