The deep-sea trolling competition blending sport, the sea, and charity in Ventotene
The Big Fish Tournament is one of the most anticipated deep-sea sport fishing competitions on the national scene. Reaching its nineteenth edition in 2026, the tournament takes place every year in early July in the waters of the island of Ventotene, in the municipality of the same name in the province of Latina, Lazio. The event is the opening leg of the Big Fish Tour, the circuit organized by the Autentico Mare Association, which continues in September in Ponza with the Lola Trophy and leads the top crews to the Big Fish Finals.
The competition is dedicated to deep-sea trolling, with swordfish as the primary target, alongside catches of tuna, albacore, dolphinfish, and spearfish. Techniques include live bait trolling and artificial lure trolling, set in a technically demanding context: the presence of large pelagic predators and open-sea conditions require experienced crews and well-prepared vessels. Competition days are interspersed with briefings, photo sessions, and social moments on land, culminating in the final awards ceremony and closing party.
Alongside the sea competition, the tournament features "La Brigata del Big Fish," a culinary contest where crews challenge each other in preparing raw fish dishes, with sessions dedicated to the gastronomic culture of the sea, from local salts to regional oils. Partners include Lazio-based food and wine producers such as the Casale del Giglio winery and Frantoio Orsini, confirming the event's strong bond with regional products.
The Big Fish Tournament has a strong charitable vocation. With the "One Strike One Smile" initiative, every strike recorded during the race turns into a donation to the Smile House Fondazione ETS, which treats children with cranio-maxillo-facial malformations such as cleft lip and palate. During the 2026 edition, crews hoisted over 200 of the foundation's flags, turning the fleet into a visible message of solidarity throughout the port.
The competition stands out for its respect for the marine environment: vessels operate at a safe distance from the Ventotene and Santo Stefano Marine Nature Reserve, and the event's philosophy promotes catch and release, with the majority of the catch returned to the sea. The main technical partner is Raymarine, supported by industry sponsors such as Italcanna, Gladiator, White Monkey, Mustad, and Fishoo.
Ventotene, the smallest inhabited island of the Pontine archipelago, is a place of unique charm: the Roman port carved into the tuff, the protected waters of the marine reserve, and its history linked to political exile and the Manifesto for Europe make it a special destination. The tournament enlivens the island at the beginning of summer, bringing crews, families, and enthusiasts to one of the most authentic corners of Lazio.
From July 2 to 5, 2026, the spotlight of Italian sport fishing turned to Ventotene, in the province of Latina, for the nineteenth edition of the Big Fish Tournament. The competition, dedicated to the search for swordfish and the great pelagic species of the Tyrrhenian Sea โ tuna, albacore, dolphinfish, and spearfish โ brought together some of the best crews on the national scene in a technically demanding context.
The program alternated days of sea competition with social moments on land: crew registration and trophy presentation on Thursday, the briefing and the "La Brigata del Big Fish" raw fish competition on Friday, the awards ceremony with a closing party on Saturday evening, and a rest day on Sunday with a tour of the archipelago.
Great emphasis was also placed on solidarity with the "One Strike One Smile" initiative: every strike recorded during the race became a donation to the Smile House Fondazione ETS, and the foundation's special prize went to the Ticket To Ride team led by captain Massimo Bottiglieri, who achieved the highest number of charitable strikes. The environmental commitment was reaffirmed, with catch and release and respect for the Ventotene and Santo Stefano Marine Nature Reserve. The best crews of this edition qualify, along with the top ten from 2025, for the Big Fish Finals scheduled in Ponza in 2027.
Ventotene can be reached by sea: ferries and hydrofoils depart year-round from Formia (Laziomar company) and, during the summer season, also from Terracina and Anzio. On the island, which is very small, it is easy to get around on foot.
The competition is reserved for crews registered via the official form on the website italiabigfish.com. Information: [email protected], tel. +39 328 6981830.
Book accommodation and ferry tickets well in advance: in early July, the island's capacity is in high demand.
