About Spigno Saturnia of Tales

In Spigno Saturnia, a village in the province of Latina at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains, summer speaks the language of fairy tales: "Spigno Saturnia of Tales" is the local stop of the Marameo Festival, Italy's largest summer festival of theatre for new generations. Across squares and hamlets, puppets and actors bring evenings under the stars to life, designed for children and families, featuring companies from all over Italy and artistic direction by the Collettivo Teatrale Bertolt Brecht of Formia.

Tales conquer the Aurunci village

Every summer, the squares of Spigno Saturnia, a small town in the province of Latina nestled on the slopes of the Aurunci Mountains, transform into open-air stages. "Spigno Saturnia of Tales" is the name of the festival that brings the Marameo Festival to the village: an interregional and international theatre festival for children. It features a program of free evening shows with an old-world charm, where puppets, actors, and storytellers share classic fairy tales and new stories with children, teenagers, and families.

A stop on Italy's largest children's theatre festival

The Marameo Festival is considered the largest summer celebration of theatre for new generations in Italy: a widespread project that spans seven regions — Abruzzo, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Marche, Molise, and Puglia — reaching over forty municipalities with hundreds of shows, workshops, exhibitions, and readings. The general coordination is entrusted to Marco Renzi, the festival's historic founder, while the Lazio programming — which, in addition to Spigno Saturnia, involves Formia, Gaeta, and Minturno — is curated by Maurizio Stammati, director of the Collettivo Teatrale Bertolt Brecht of Formia, one of the most active groups in children's theatre in southern Lazio.

The 2026 program: Robin Hood, puppets, and Don Quixote

The sixth edition of Spigno Saturnia of Tales opens on May 31, 2026, with an afternoon event at the Capodacqua Spring, where the Teatro Bertolt Brecht presents "Pulcinella Mon Amour". The heart of the festival beats in July, with three consecutive Friday evenings at 9:00 PM: on July 17 in Piazza San Giovanni, in Spigno Superiore, "Robin Hood" by the Guardiani dell'Oca company from Chieti arrives; on July 24, Piazzetta Fratelli Venturino, in the Campodivivo area, hosts "Fagiolino and the Golden Donkey" by the Teatro del Drago of Ravenna, a historic family of puppet artists; the grand finale is on July 31 in Piazzetta Santo Stefano with "Everyone Crazy for Don Quixote" by the Teatro Bertolt Brecht of Formia.

A festival that inhabits the landscape

The itinerant formula is part of the event's identity: every evening inhabits a different corner of the municipal territory, from the medieval village of Spigno Superiore to the hamlet of Campodivivo, up to the Capodacqua Spring, immersed in the greenery of the Monti Aurunci Natural Park. Attending a show here also means discovering the corners, alleys, and small squares of an authentic town in southern Lazio, just a few kilometres from the Gulf of Gaeta.

Local support

The festival is promoted with the patronage and support of the Municipality of Spigno Saturnia, the Lazio Region, and the Ministry of Culture, together with the Monti Aurunci Natural Park and UTOPIA, the Italian Association of Theatre for Children. This networking effort has allowed a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants to become, edition after edition, a reference point for children's theatre in the province of Latina.

Why visit

  • Open-air evening shows designed for children and families in a village festival atmosphere.
  • Professional companies from all over Italy: puppets, marionettes, actor theatre, and storytelling.
  • The opportunity to discover the village of Spigno Superiore and the hamlets at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains.
  • A stop on the Marameo circuit, the great widespread festival of theatre for children.

Spigno Saturnia of Tales — edition 2026

The 6th edition of Spigno Saturnia of Tales enlivens spring and summer 2026 with four children's theatre shows: starting on May 31 at the Capodacqua Spring and continuing on the Fridays of July between Spigno Superiore and Campodivivo, with companies from Formia, Chieti, and Ravenna. The festival is part of the Marameo Festival, scheduled in seven Italian regions from June 5 to September 29, 2026.

For the sixth edition, the festival confirms its itinerant formula: four appointments distributed between May and July 2026, each in a different place in the municipality. After the preview at the end of May at the Capodacqua Spring, the three Fridays of July bring to the stage, at 9:00 PM, an adventure classic, traditional Emilian puppets, and a tribute to Cervantes. All shows are designed for children and families and are held outdoors, in the squares of the village and hamlets.
