Open-air theatrical performances in the small squares of the village of Sperlonga, every Friday and Saturday in July

Theatre under the Stars is the summer theater festival that enlivens the small squares of the historic center of Sperlonga, one of the most beautiful villages in southern Lazio. Every Friday and Saturday in July, as evening falls, the panoramic staircases and small plazas of the old town become improvised auditoriums: the audience takes their seats among the Mediterranean-style white houses, with the sea as a natural backdrop, and enjoys performances designed for the unique setting of the village.
The common thread of the festival is the deep bond between Sperlonga and its sea. The stage features stories inspired by the lives of fishermen, maritime traditions, and local legends, alongside repertoire plays brought by guest companies. It is a form of proximity theater that shortens the distance between actors and spectators: the cozy dimensions of the squares create an intimate atmosphere that is hard to find in traditional theaters.
The program alternates between theater companies from the Pontine territory and nationally renowned guests, offering a varied schedule that ranges from prose to storytelling, with forays into comedy. The festival's format, with multiple events spread throughout the month of July, allows residents and tourists to create their own viewing itinerary during their holidays.
The festival is part of the rich summer calendar promoted in the territory of the Municipality of Sperlonga, in the province of Latina, which between June and September complements theatrical performances with food and wine events such as Sapori di Mare, the Octopus and Tiella Festival, the Ferragosto celebrations, and end-of-season musical reviews. The July theater program represents the most intimate and cultural moment of this calendar, an invitation to discover the village beyond its beaches.
Perched on a rocky spur between Terracina and Gaeta, Sperlonga is famous for its historic center of steep alleys and whitewashed houses, for its Blue Flag awarded beaches, and for the Villa of Tiberius with its spectacular grotto that housed the sculptural groups now kept in the National Archaeological Museum. Attending a show under the stars in this setting means experiencing the town in its most authentic dimension, when the daily flow of beachgoers gives way to the slow life of the village.
Seating in the squares is limited: to enjoy the show from a good position, it is advisable to arrive at least half an hour early. Summer evenings by the sea can be breezy even in the height of summer, so it is useful to bring a light layer for after sunset.
The 2026 edition of Theatre under the Stars takes place throughout the month of July, with evening appointments every Friday and Saturday in the small squares of Sperlonga's historic center. The formula remains the one that has made the festival recognizable: proximity theater in cozy spaces, with the white village and the sea acting as a natural backdrop.
The program alternates between local companies and nationally renowned guests, with programming that favors stories linked to the sea, the tradition of fishermen, and local legends. The festival is part of the broader Sperlonga summer calendar, which in 2026 includes, among other things, Sapori di Mare at the end of June, the Octopus and Tiella Festival in July, and musical reviews in August.
Seats in the squares are limited: it is recommended to arrive at least half an hour before the start time of the performances.
By car, Sperlonga can be reached along the SS213 Flacca, between Terracina and Gaeta; in summer, it is advisable to park in the parking areas at the bottom and walk up to the historic center, which is closed to traffic. By train, the reference station is Fondi-Sperlonga (Rome-Naples line), connected to the town by buses and shuttles, which are more frequent in the summer season.
Performances are held in the evening in the squares of the historic center, every Friday and Saturday in July. Seats are limited: it is best to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start. For updated times and programs, it is best to consult the local tourist office and the information channels of the Municipality of Sperlonga.
