In the Le Forna district, at the northern tip of the island of Ponza (Municipality of Ponza, province of Latina, Lazio), August 15th and 16th mark the most defining event of the island's summer. Here, the patronal feast dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption is not just a tourist attraction but a community ritual passed down through generations, drawing back both emigrant islanders and the many vacationers who choose the island specifically for these dates.

August 15th: from the dawn reveille to fireworks over the sea

The day begins very early. At dawn, the diana—a festive wake-up call with church bells and a marching band—awakens Le Forna, welcoming pilgrims who have walked through the night from the port and other parts of the island. This multi-kilometer trek along the scenic road, between the darkness and the first light over the sea, is an integral part of the celebration.

In the late morning, a solemn mass is celebrated in the church of Santa Maria Assunta, often officiated by ecclesiastical authorities from the Diocese of Gaeta, to which the island belongs. In the late afternoon, the statue of the Assumption is carried out for the procession, which descends toward Cala Caparra accompanied by the band and the faithful. This is the most evocative moment, as the procession reaches the sea, offering a blessing to the fishermen and all those who traverse the waters for their livelihood.

In the evening, the square in front of the church transforms into a stage for a concert or musical performance, and the day concludes shortly after midnight with fireworks launched over the water, visible from much of the island's northern coast and from boats anchored offshore.

August 16th: The Blue Fish Festival

The following day, the tone shifts to gastronomy. The Blue Fish Festival brings the square in front of the church to life. Freshly landed local catch is cleaned, prepared, and fried or grilled on-site to be served to the public. Anchovies, mackerel, horse mackerel, and other blue fish from the Pontine Tyrrhenian Sea form the basis of this simple, honest cuisine that has nourished the island's fishing families for centuries.
