Music, art, cinema, and dance among the UNESCO sites of central Sicily
The Between Music&Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary event held in Piazza Armerina, in the free municipal consortium of Enna, spreading across the neighboring towns of central Sicily. Promoted by the Globart Cultural Association and the Saint Louis College of Music in Rome, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the festival creates a dialogue between music, visual arts, cinema, dance, and the spoken word in some of the most evocative locations in the Mediterranean.
The heart of Between beats between the Villa Romana del Casale, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage mosaics, the Archaeological Museum of Aidone which houses the Goddess of Morgantina, the archaeological area of Sofiana in Mazzarino, and the historic palaces in the center of Piazza Armerina. The choice of these venues is not merely scenic: the festival was born to restore life and contemporary relevance to the heritage of the Sicilian hinterland, which is too often left off the main tourist circuits.
Each edition revolves around a theme. The guiding thread of the event is the idea of the Mediterranean as a bridge between cultures, shores, and generations: the border not as a barrier, but as a threshold to be crossed together. From this vision comes the Artistic Campus, a creative residency that brings together young talents from Europe and North Africa, selected through an international call, who are tasked with producing new musical and cinematic works to be presented to the public.
Over the years, Between has hosted world-class musicians, bridging jazz, singer-songwriter music, and Mediterranean sounds. Alongside the concerts, there are photographic exhibitions, dance performances, screenings of international films with directors and producers in attendance, talks, and presentations. Admission to all events is free, a choice that reaffirms the festival's vocation as an open meeting place for everyone.
More than just a series of events, the Between Music&Arts Festival is a cultural project that involves the entire district, from local institutions to women-led farms, from museum sites to local associations. For those visiting Sicily in the summer, it represents a precious opportunity to discover the Enna hinterland far from the beaten tourist paths, experiencing art in the very places that shaped the island's history.
The fifth edition of the festival, scheduled from July 1st to 5th, 2026, has as its theme "Borders-Together": a key to interpretation that runs through the entire program and places the Mediterranean at the center as a space for dialogue, creativity, and encounter. The event takes place between Piazza Armerina, Aidone, Mazzarino, and Gibellina, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The inauguration on Wednesday, July 1st, is held at the Villa Romana del Casale: opening at 7:00 PM, at 7:30 PM the photographic exhibition "Odysseus on the High Seas" by Barbara Luisi, at 8:00 PM the dance performance "Penelope, You Speak!" with Giulia Tonelli and Barbara Luisi on violin, and at 9:00 PM the inaugural concert "Great Italian Music Beyond Borders" with pianist Danilo Rea and accordionist Luciano Biondini.
Friday, July 3rd, the festival opens at dawn, at 6:00 AM, in the archaeological area of Sofiana in Mazzarino; in the evening, at 9:00 PM in Piazza Duomo, "Mediterranean Mosaik" with Ziad Trabelsi & Carthage Mosaik Band feat. Yasemin Sannino and Houcine Ataa. Saturday, July 4th, at 6:00 PM, "Art and Nature in the Mediterranean Lands" at a farm in the Floresta district of Mazzarino. On Sunday, July 5th, at Palazzo Trigona, the talks dedicated to the Gibellina Capital of Contemporary Art 2026 project and the Cinema Campus close the festival.
The 2026 lineup alternates dawn concerts and international artists like Ziad Trabelsi, the Servillo-Girotto-Mangalavite trio, and the young singer-songwriter Francesca Feci, with original works created by participants of the Artistic Campus, a creative residency that brings together young European and North African talents at the former convent of Sant'Anna. All events are free to attend.
Piazza Armerina can be reached by car via the SS117bis from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello or Dittaino exits) or from the A18. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 90 km) and Palermo (approx. 160 km). The Villa Romana del Casale is about 5 km from the town center.
All festival events are free to attend. It is recommended to check the official website for any reservations required for limited-capacity venues.
The festival takes place in the summer, traditionally in July, with events distributed between Piazza Armerina and the surrounding towns.
