The children's Epiphany in San Mauro a Signa, featuring stockings, games, and tradition
Every January 6th, on the day of the Epiphany, the Befana Festival draws children and families to San Mauro a Signa, a village in the Municipality of Signa, in the Province of Florence. Organized by Pro Loco Signa in collaboration with the Circolo S.O.R.M.S., it is one of those local festivals that preserves the most genuine spirit of Tuscan folk traditions: nothing overly spectacular or staged, just an afternoon of games, sweets, and community that brings the long Christmas holiday period to a cheerful close.
The absolute star is, of course, the charming old lady on her broomstick, who arrives laden with surprises. According to tradition, the Befana gives all the children present stockings filled with sweets, the most anticipated moment of the afternoon. This ritual serves as the centerpiece for a festival tailored to children, complete with entertainment, music, and plenty of games that fill the Circolo's arena with magic.
The afternoon is filled with activities designed to engage children in a magical atmosphere. There is a snack offered to the little ones, while parents can enjoy an aperitif: a perfect way for families to gather and experience one of the most cherished moments of the local calendar. It is precisely this sense of community that makes the festival a highly anticipated event for the residents of Signa and the surrounding areas.
Nestled along the Arno river at the gates of Florence, Signa is a town that has successfully maintained a rich calendar of events and celebrations throughout the year. The Befana Festival is part of this lively associative tradition, supported by the Pro Loco and the local club network, and represents the sweetest way to bid farewell to the holidays and accompany children back to school. Admission is free and open to everyone.
For the 2026 Epiphany, Pro Loco Signa, in collaboration with Circolo S.O.R.M.S., enlivened the afternoon of Monday, January 6th, in San Mauro a Signa. From 2:30 PM, the arena next to the Circolo was dressed for the occasion to welcome children and families for an afternoon of fun, tradition, and community.
The charming old lady on her broomstick was the absolute star, gifting all the little ones present with traditional stockings filled with sweets. There was also a snack for the children and an aperitif for the parents.
Initiative carried out with the support of sponsors Publiacqua and Banco Fiorentino (Mugello – Impruneta – Signa).
