The summer celebration in one of the smallest villages in Irpinia

The Beer Festival is the event that, at the end of July, draws people from all over the valley to Petruro Irpino, a tiny municipality in the Province of Avellino, in Campania. With just over three hundred inhabitants and a territory of barely three square kilometers, Petruro is one of the smallest towns in the entire region: this is precisely why the festival holds special value here, as for one weekend the village fills with visitors and the local districts become meeting places once again.

The event does not take place in the historic center, which is perched on a panoramic spur at an altitude of five hundred meters, but further down in Contrada Lago inferiore: an open, accessible space where beer taps, food stalls, and the stage can be set up without the constraints of the village alleys. It is a practical choice that has become well-established over the years, making the festival easily reachable even for those arriving by car from neighboring towns.

Frothy mugs, live music, and great food

The formula, summarized by the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, is the classic one for Irpinian beer festivals: you drink, eat, and listen to live music outdoors until late in the evening. There is no pretense of being a major beer festival or a connoisseur's tasting event; rather, it is a well-organized village evening where beer serves as a pretext for being together under the stars in the heart of the Irpinian summer.

Those arriving from outside the region will find a much more authentic atmosphere than that of certain events built for tourism, along with the chance to chat with those who actually organize the festival.

Petruro Irpino, between the Sabato Valley and the Greco di Tufo hills

Petruro Irpino is, as the Touring Club defines it, "a handful of houses on a panoramic spur": a compact settlement surrounded by vineyards and woods, overlooking the Sabato River valley. The town is part of the production area of Greco di Tufo, one of the great white wines of Campania, along with municipalities such as Tufo, Altavilla Irpina, Chianche, Torrioni, and Santa Paolina. This detail explains much about the character of the place: life here still revolves around the vineyard, the agricultural seasons, and a calendar of festivals that marks the year better than any agenda.

The patron saint of the town is Saint Bartholomew, and the Festival in honor of Mary Most Holy of Montevergine is also linked to popular faith, being one of the most heartfelt anniversaries for the Petruro community.

A busy summer calendar for a village of three hundred inhabitants

The Beer Festival is not an isolated event: the Municipality of Petruro Irpino and local associations enliven the year with a series of appointments that, for such a small center, are surprisingly consistent. Among those highlighted by the Province of Avellino portal are:

• "The Passion of the Living Christ", a sacred performance in March
• Festum Veris, a spring celebration in April
• Beer Festival, in July in Contrada Lago inferiore
• Fusillo and Greco Festival, in August, dedicated to handmade pasta and the territory's signature wine
• Festival in honor of Mary Most Holy of Montevergine

Those planning a weekend in this part of Irpinia can therefore combine the festival with a visit to the Greco di Tufo wineries and a tour of the nearby villages, all reachable in a few minutes by car.

When it takes place

In recent years, the Beer Festival has been held on the last weekend of July: Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27, 2025 and, the previous year, July 27 and 28, 2024. For the 2026 edition, there are currently no official dates published: it is advisable to check for updates on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino or with the Municipality of Petruro Irpino before traveling.
