Celebrations for the Patron Saint of Campi Bisenzio, featuring a procession, solemn mass, and local traditions
Every spring, Campi Bisenzio, a populous town in the Metropolitan City of Florence, Tuscany, gathers to honor its Patron Saint, Blessed Teresa Maria della Croce, known to all as "Bettina." The Beata Bettina Festival is both a religious observance and a community celebration: for a few days, this town in the Florentine Plain hosts a calendar of events that weaves together devotion, music, sports, and popular traditions.
Teresa Adelaide Cesira Manetti was born in the San Martino district of Campi Bisenzio in 1846. Nicknamed "Bettina" from a young age, she grew up in a family facing severe economic hardship following her father's death. In 1874, along with two companions, she founded a small religious community that eventually became the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Teresa, known as the "Bettine." She promoted the construction of the convent and church of San Martino, which remains the spiritual heart of the festival today. Beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Florence in 1986, she was declared the Patron Saint of Campi Bisenzio in 1999 following a popular petition that gathered thousands of signatures.
The most solemn moment is the procession held on the eve of the feast, which travels from Via San Rocco to the San Martino Convent, where oil is presented to the votive lamp near the Patron Saint's memorial plaque. On the day of the feast, a Solemn High Mass is held at the convent, presided over by a bishop or abbot, in the presence of the local community and the sisters of the order founded by Bettina.
Alongside the liturgical events, the festival offers activities open to all: concerts featuring local musical groups, screenings dedicated to the life of the Blessed Mother, and, most notably, the Bettina Trophy, a regional youth athletics event organized by the CSI at the Zatopek Stadium, which has become a staple of the local sports calendar.
The celebrations extend to the village of Capalle, where the concurrent Saints' Festival brings a special market to the square, along with a medieval re-enactment featuring a historical pageant, knights, ladies, flag-wavers, and entertainment for children. It is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover the village and its traditions during a day of festivities that involves the entire community.
The Beata Bettina Festival is an authentic event, far from the main tourist trails, that captures the true identity of Campi Bisenzio and the Florentine Plain. Popular devotion, historical memory, and conviviality blend in a free event, perfect for those wishing to experience the more intimate side of Tuscany and its local community rituals.
From April 22 to 26, 2026, Campi Bisenzio celebrated its Patron Saint, Blessed Teresa Maria della Croce. The festival opened with the solemn evening procession and continued over the following days with liturgies, musical moments, and sporting events, culminating in the day dedicated to the village of Capalle.
The main religious events take place at the San Martino Convent and along Via San Rocco in Campi Bisenzio (FI). The Bettina Trophy is held at the Zatopek Stadium, while the market and medieval re-enactment take place in the village of Capalle.
Campi Bisenzio is located just a few kilometers from Florence, in the Florentine Plain. By car, it is easily accessible from the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (Firenze Nord exit) and the A1.
