About Bassano Romano Carnival

The Bassano Romano Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions in this village nestled in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia. Every year, the Bassano Romano Carnival Association brings the streets to life with parades of papier-mâché floats, costumed groups, music, and vibrant colors. The Winter Carnival culminates on Shrove Tuesday with the burning of Trenzio, the effigy that marks the end of the carnival season. It is a free, popular event that brings together locals and visitors from across the Viterbo province.

The Bassano Romano Carnival: A Living Tradition in the Tuscia

In the small town of Bassano Romano, nestled among the Cimini Mountains in the province of Viterbo, Carnival is far more than just a festival: it is a collective ritual that mobilizes much of the local population every year. The weeks leading up to the event are dedicated to crafting the allegorical floats, built by hand from papier-mâché and featuring original themes, costumes, and choreography. When Carnival arrives, the village streets fill with music, colors, and masks, creating one of the most authentic folk traditions in Lazio.

The Winter Carnival and the Burning of Trenzio

The heart of the event is the Winter Carnival, which takes place over the Sundays of the carnival season and culminates on Shrove Tuesday. After days of parades, the most anticipated moment is the burning of Trenzio, a large papier-mâché effigy set ablaze—a symbolic gesture that closes the carnival period and marks the transition into Lent. Masked groups, children, and families parade around the floats, while the historic center transforms into a large open-air celebration space.

A Carnival That Lives All Year Round

Bassano Romano is one of the few villages to celebrate two carnival events: in addition to the winter edition, the Bassano Romano Carnival Association also organizes the Summer Carnival on Ferragosto (August 14th). As the sun sets, the allegorical floats return to parade through the streets, followed by music and entertainment in the Mario Cenciarini Public Park. It is an unusual and successful formula that allows visitors to relive the carnival atmosphere in the heart of summer.

Allegorical Floats and Popular Participation

The floats are the community's true pride: each group spends months working on the realization of these imposing structures, blending satire, fantasy, and references to current events. The construction of the floats is an authentic craft passed down from generation to generation, uniting carpenters, artists, and volunteers. The parades are accompanied by food stalls, music, the traditional Winter Carnival Lottery, and activities dedicated to children.

An Appointment in the Heart of the Tuscia

The Bassano Romano Carnival is an ideal opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Lazio, just a few kilometers from Lake Vico and Sutri. The village, dominated by the 17th-century Palazzo Odescalchi, offers visitors a charming historical setting in which to experience a genuine, free, and deeply rooted tradition of the Viterbo province.
