Float parades and masquerade parties in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, at an altitude of about 520 meters, the small town of Basicò (Province of Messina, Sicily) celebrates its annual Carnival, one of the most cherished events for the local community. Despite the modest size of the village, which has just over six hundred inhabitants, the festival succeeds in engaging both young and old in an atmosphere of shared joy, turning the narrow streets into an open-air stage.
The highlight of the Basicò Carnival is the parade of allegorical floats, which winds through the town center amidst music, confetti, and masks. The floats, crafted with passion by local associations and groups, go beyond mere entertainment: they often choose pressing current themes and present them with a touch of irony. In the 2025 edition, for example, the Pro Loco float addressed the theme of world peace with the slogan "#lapac(h)enelmondo," inviting the public to reflect on the true path to peace.
The Basicò Carnival program extends well beyond the parades. The days are marked by masquerade parties for children, entertainment, and games, while the evenings heat up with music and dancing that bring together families, young people, and the older generation. The event is the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Basicò, the Pro Loco, the Parish of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Vivere Insieme association, proving how the Carnival serves as a vital bond for the entire village.
Visiting Basicò during the Carnival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Messina Nebrodi area, home to the Mother Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, the De Maria Baronial Palace, and a gastronomic tradition centered on local cheeses, most notably the renowned provola basicotana. The Carnival thus represents a key element of the identity of this inland part of the Province of Messina, where popular festivals remain a powerful moment of social cohesion.
At the moment, the Municipality of Basicò and the Pro Loco have not yet released the program for the 2026 Carnival. Based on the tradition of previous years, the event is expected to take place during the Carnival period, between February and March, featuring float parades, entertainment for children, and evenings of music and dance. We recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality and local associations for updated dates and details.
The parades and festivities take place along the streets and squares of the center of Basicò (ME), in Sicily.
The Carnival is held during the pre-Lenten season, between February and March. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Basicò and the Pro Loco closer to the event.
Basicò can be reached by car from the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina by heading inland towards the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest motorway exit is on the A20 Messina-Palermo, heading towards the Tyrrhenian coastal towns, from where you continue along the internal provincial roads.
Access to the parades and festivities is free.
