Wooden chalets, festive lights, and Christmas villages in the heart of Bari Vecchia

The Bari Christmas Markets are the highlight that, every December, ignites the festive spirit in the capital of Puglia. Organized by the Municipality of Bari, the event transforms the historic center and the seafront into a trail of lights, scents, and craftsmanship that connects the Bari Vecchia district to the squares of the Murattian center.
The heart of the markets consists of wooden chalets set up along Via Venezia, the charming promenade of the Muraglia overlooking the sea, in the stretch between Piazza del Ferrarese and Fortino Sant'Antonio. These temporary shops offer handmade goods, toys, decorations, nativity scenes, and Christmas-themed accessories, set against the unique backdrop of the ancient walls of the old city and the Adriatic Sea.
The symbolic moment is the lighting of the massive Christmas tree in Piazza del Ferrarese, standing several meters tall, which marks the start of the celebrations in conjunction with the Feast of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Bari. Throughout the city center, festive lights illuminate the main shopping streets, such as Via Sparano and Via Argiro, while Piazza Umberto I hosts the Santa Claus Village, dedicated to children with workshops, installations, and immersive activities.
Christmas in Bari is not limited to the center: the initiative involves all five municipal districts of the city, with mini-markets, nativity scenes, roving concerts, and displays that bring the holiday atmosphere to the more peripheral neighborhoods as well. The result is a widespread event that accompanies locals and visitors from the beginning of December through to the Epiphany celebrations.
Strolling among the chalets on the Muraglia at sunset, with the lights reflecting on the sea and the scent of typical Apulian sweets in the air, is an experience that captures the welcoming soul of Bari. The event blends religious tradition, popular culture, and local craftsmanship, offering one of the most evocative Christmas experiences in all of Puglia. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Bari: they will take place, as per tradition, during the month of December.
The official dates for the 2026 edition of the Bari Christmas Markets have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to return in December, featuring wooden chalets along the Muraglia of Bari Vecchia, the Christmas tree in Piazza del Ferrarese, and the Santa Claus Village in Piazza Umberto I. The detailed program will be published by the Municipality of Bari in the weeks leading up to the event.
The wooden chalets are located along Via Venezia (the Muraglia), between Piazza del Ferrarese and Fortino Sant'Antonio, in the historic center of Bari Vecchia. The Santa Claus Village is in Piazza Umberto I, and festive lights are found in the Murattian center.
Bari is served by the Karol Wojtyła Airport (Bari-Palese) and the Bari Centrale railway station, located just a few minutes' walk from Piazza Umberto I. The historic center is pedestrianized and easily accessible on foot from the station.
Access to the markets and event areas is free. The usual opening hours for the chalets run from the morning until late evening during the Christmas period.
