The Carnival of Porto San Giorgio within Baraonda: parade of masked groups, Lu Cucà and the burning of King Carnival
Baraonda is the Carnival that unites two cities in the Fermo area, Fermo and Porto San Giorgio, in a single, widespread program of about twenty days. Under the common umbrella of Baraonda, each city retains its own identity: in Porto San Giorgio, in the coastal municipality of the Province of Fermo (Marche), Carnival has a long tradition and concludes with the grand parade on Shrove Tuesday along the streets of the center.
The heart of the festival is the procession of masked groups and the allegorical float that crosses the center of Porto San Giorgio. The caravan forms in via Giordano Bruno and proceeds along viale Buozzi, with the main stage set up in Piazza Matteotti, then winds through viale Cavallotti and viale Don Minzoni. The route is repeated twice, and along the way, some speakers tell the audience about the characteristics of each group. Schools, associations, and local groups parade with ever-changing themed costumes, and a jury awards prizes to the three best groups.
The absolute protagonist is Lu Cucà, the traditional mask of Porto San Giorgio whose name in dialect refers to the seagull, the symbol of the seaside town. Alongside her parades King Carnival, along with the historic Fermo masks Mengone Torcicolli and Lisetta, testifying to the bond between the two cities. The festival culminates in the final act in Piazza delle Marine: the trial, the condemnation, the will, and finally the burning of the effigy of King Carnival, about three meters high, which symbolically closes the celebrations.
During the Baraonda period, in addition to the parade, the center of Porto San Giorgio hosts shows, balls, entertainment, street games, and initiatives dedicated to children and families. Admission to all events is free, and the organization is managed by the Municipalities of Porto San Giorgio and Fermo together with local associations. Baraonda is today one of the most heartfelt and popular Carnival events in the Marche region.
The 29th edition of the Carnival of Porto San Giorgio, as part of Baraonda 2026, culminated on Tuesday, February 17th. At 3:00 PM, the procession of masked groups (13 groups and one float) departed from via Giordano Bruno along viale Buozzi, with the main stage in Piazza Matteotti and the route repeated twice between viale Cavallotti and viale Don Minzoni. From 5:00 PM, music and dancing with Jerry Nardi in Piazza Matteotti, and at 5:30 PM, the awards ceremony for the top three groups. At 6:00 PM, in Piazza delle Marine, the trial and burning of the three-meter-high effigy of King Carnival.
