About Festival of Saint Quiricus

Every mid-July, the village of Lapedona, on the hills of the Province of Fermo, gathers around its patron saint, Saint Quiricus the Martyr, the little saint protector of children whose wooden statue is venerated in the ancient Romanesque church of the same name. Two days of religious celebrations and civil festivities animate the streets of the historic center: solemn masses, processions with the band, shows for children, and musical evenings in Piazza Giacomo Leopardi. It is an intimate and heartfelt festival, where the popular faith of the Marche region intertwines with the conviviality of the town.

The patronal feast of Lapedona

The Festival of Saint Quiricus the Martyr is the most anticipated event of the year for the small Municipality of Lapedona, a village perched on the hills of the Province of Fermo, in the Marche region. In mid-July, the entire community gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Quiricus, the child martyr venerated since the Middle Ages as the protector of the castle and, above all, of the little ones. The festival combines the deeply rooted religious dimension with the civil celebrations that liven up the historic center and Piazza Giacomo Leopardi.

Who was Saint Quiricus

Saint Quiricus is one of the oldest and most tender saints in Christian tradition: a child martyred along with his mother Juliet during the persecutions of the early centuries. In Lapedona, his memory is preserved in the Church of Saint Quiricus, a Romanesque jewel from the 11th-14th centuries with a suggestive crypt with vaults and columns, and 15th-century frescoes depicting the Madonna of Milk, Saint Judith, and the martyrdom of the little saint. Inside is preserved the venerated wooden statue of the patron saint, carried in procession during the festival.

Two days of celebrations

The heart of the festival is the procession that winds through the village streets accompanied by the brass band, with the saint's statue carried on shoulders among the stone houses of the historic center. The days begin with morning masses and culminate in the solemn mass and Eucharistic blessing. Alongside the religious program, the civil celebrations offer moments designed for families:

  • shows and entertainment for children in the square;
  • concerts and open-air musical evenings;
  • musical accompaniment by the band during the procession;
  • moments of conviviality that bring together residents and visitors.

A village to discover

Visiting Lapedona during the patronal feast also means discovering one of the most charming villages in the Fermo area, with its medieval layout, its four ancient districts, and glimpses of the Aso Valley down to the Adriatic Sea. The Festival of Saint Quiricus is the ideal opportunity to experience the authentic hospitality of the Marche region and the popular spirituality of this corner of the Marche, still far from mass tourism.
