In the heart of the Monferrato plains, just a few kilometers from Casale Monferrato, the Municipality of Balzola (province of Alessandria, Piedmont) celebrates its most cherished event every year: the Balzola Festival and Palio dei Cantoni. For a few days, the village is transformed: public gardens become kitchens and meeting places, squares host parades and shows, and the districts compete for the title through games and contests.

What is the Palio dei Cantoni

The Palio dei Cantoni is the competitive and identity-driven heart of the festival. Balzola is ideally divided into several districts — neighborhoods corresponding to different areas of the village, such as Quadro, Villa Cascine, Giarone Borgoratto, Pozzarello, Villaveri, and Piazza Vignazza — and each district fields its own teams. The challenge is played out in sports disciplines and popular games: foosball, volleyball, table tennis, bocce, and 5-a-side football, with a general leaderboard updated after each match until the winning district is proclaimed. It is a formula that generates great popular participation: citizens of all ages meet every evening to cheer and take part in the contest, in an atmosphere of healthy rivalry between neighbors.

Sports, music, and gastronomy

Alongside the Palio competitions, the festival offers a rich program for everyone. It kicks off with the Balzola Run, the footrace that opens the festivities, and continues with parades, DJ sets, shows, and moments dedicated to the community. There is also the food and wine stand managed by the Pro Loco in the public gardens, where you can enjoy local Monferrato specialties in good company. Sunday is the most traditional day, featuring a hobbyist market, Holy Mass, a lunch dedicated to the elderly, and a celebration for primary school pupils.
