The Balduina Carnival is one of the most popular events on the calendar for this district, located in the northwest quadrant of Rome, in the Lazio region. This is not a tourist-focused event with monumental floats, but something rarer in the capital: a neighborhood party, built by residents for residents, which gives the squares and arcades of the district back to the children for an afternoon.

The initiative is promoted by the Balduina'S association, a network of inhabitants, families, and merchants that has been enlivening the district's social life for years with recurring events like Balduween in October and spring street festivals. The Carnival, however, is the most anticipated event: it is the one that manages to bring three generations out of their homes at the same time.

How the day unfolds

The structure of the festival remains consistent from year to year and is now familiar to the entire neighborhood. The meeting point is in the early afternoon in Piazza della Balduina, where the face painting area is set up alongside entertainment spaces: shows, giant soap bubbles, puppets, games, and creative workshops occupy the square as the masked participants continue to arrive.

In the mid-afternoon, the most scenic moment begins: the masked parade. This colorful and noisy procession passes under the arcades, climbs the small staircases, and winds through the streets of the district, from Via Baldi to Via Ugo de Carolis, accompanied by music and entertainment, until it reaches Piazza Giovenale.

The grand finale takes place here, featuring surprise games, prizes for the best costumes, balloon animals, musical entertainment, and group dances that involve moms, dads, and grandparents alike. There is no shortage of frappe and castagnole—the fried pastries that mark the Carnival season throughout Rome—offered by local businesses.

The setting: Balduina

Balduina is a residential district that grew largely between the 1950s and 1970s on the slopes of Monte Mario, the highest hill in Rome. It is an area of buildings overlooking greenery, staircases connecting the different levels of the hill, and terrace-like squares from which you can catch a glimpse of the dome of St. Peter's. This multi-level layout is what makes the Carnival parade so unique: the procession does not just cross a simple avenue, but climbs and descends through arcades and stairways.

In recent years, the district has seen the growth of a very active community network, committed to issues of urban decorum, soft mobility, and the redevelopment of public spaces like the Monte Ciocci park. In this sense, the Carnival is much more than a masquerade party: it is the moment when an urban community recognizes itself and shows itself to the world.
