The festival of greenery, flowers, and gardening in the heart of Santarcangelo
Every spring, the medieval village of Santarcangelo di Romagna, in the province of Rimini, transforms into a large, widespread garden thanks to Balconi Fioriti, one of the most beloved floral events in Emilia-Romagna. For an entire weekend, Piazza Ganganelli, the streets of the historic center, and adjacent squares are filled with plants, flowers, colors, and scents, welcoming thousands of visitors and effectively marking the start of the Romagna tourist season.
The heart of the event is the large market exhibition of plants, flowers, gardening, and crafts that occupies Piazza Ganganelli, complemented by stands of agricultural products, garden produce, and wellness items in Piazza Marini. Nursery owners, florists, producers, and artisans offer flowers, essences, tools, and ideas for greenery, while the floral arrangements of "Balconi in fiore" (Balconies in bloom) decorate the streets of the natural shopping center, guiding visitors on a walk between art and nature.
Balconi Fioriti is not just a market: it's a widespread celebration made up of gardening workshops for children, meetings on nature and sustainability, art and poetry exhibitions, book presentations, and show cooking dedicated to flowers in cooking. The program intertwines the pleasure of greenery with Santarcangelo's culture, gastronomy, and traditions, in an informal and family-friendly atmosphere that involves the entire village.
The most anticipated moment remains the Balconi Fioriti competition, which gives the event its name: a jury awards the most well-kept balconies, shop windows, and creations in the city, divided into the categories of City Balcony, Flowering Balcony, Creativity, and Shop Window. The award ceremony, on Sunday afternoon in Piazza Ganganelli, beautifully concludes a weekend that combines the Santarcangelo residents' love for greenery with the discovery of one of Romagna's most charming villages.
