Theatre, music, and performing arts under the stars at the Teatro del Baglio in Villafrati
The Baglio Festival is a summer showcase of theatre, music, and performing arts that brings the Teatro del Baglio to life every July. Located within the historic Baglio Filangeri in Villafrati, in the province of Palermo, Sicily, the festival began as a cultural project linked to the local municipal theatre. It transforms the courtyard and the surrounding spaces into an open-air stage where, for several consecutive evenings, a variety of plays, concerts, and performances take place.
The organisers describe the programme as "a diverse, intentionally eclectic showcase of theatre, music, words, gestures, and surprises": a continuous creative flow that brings excitement, movement, and new possibilities to the Villafrati community. Alongside prose theatre and contemporary drama, the festival features singer-songwriter music, comedy, storytelling, and traditional Sicilian folk arts, creating a constant dialogue between artistic research and local roots.
The heart of the festival is the Teatro del Baglio, a cultural venue in Villafrati housed within the Baglio Filangeri, an ancient fortified farmhouse typical of the Sicilian agricultural landscape. The setting of the baglio, with its sturdy walls and courtyard, gives the performances an intimate and evocative atmosphere, where architecture and stagecraft blend perfectly on summer nights.
One of the defining features of the Baglio Festival is that admission is free for all events, making it an accessible gathering for both residents and visitors and a vital cultural hub for the Palermo hinterland. Performances generally take place late in the evening, around 9:30 PM, when the summer heat gives way to the cool Sicilian night air.
Villafrati is a small town in the province of Palermo, situated in the hilly hinterland south of the regional capital. For the town and its surrounding areas, the festival serves as a key social and cultural event during the summer, helping to showcase the heritage of the Baglio Filangeri and bringing high-quality theatre and music to areas outside the major city circuits.
The 2026 Baglio Festival brings a new season of evening performances back to Villafrati at the Teatro del Baglio, within the Baglio Filangeri complex. The programme announced by the organisers includes titles such as Gran Parata, I Mezzalira, Roberto Baggio, Io sono verticale, Chi sputa 'n cielo ce retorna 'n facce, and Quando gli Dei erano tanti, culminating in the traditional closing party. As in previous editions, events take place late in the evening and admission is free.
The festival confirms its multidisciplinary focus, alternating between prose theatre, contemporary drama, music, and traditional folk languages. For specific dates of each performance and programme updates, please consult the official Teatro del Baglio website.
