Baglio Festival

A summer festival in the heart of the Baglio Filangeri

The Baglio Festival is a summer showcase of theatre, music, and performing arts that brings the Teatro del Baglio to life every July. Located within the historic Baglio Filangeri in Villafrati, in the province of Palermo, Sicily, the festival began as a cultural project linked to the local municipal theatre. It transforms the courtyard and the surrounding spaces into an open-air stage where, for several consecutive evenings, a variety of plays, concerts, and performances take place.

A multidisciplinary programme

The organisers describe the programme as "a diverse, intentionally eclectic showcase of theatre, music, words, gestures, and surprises": a continuous creative flow that brings excitement, movement, and new possibilities to the Villafrati community. Alongside prose theatre and contemporary drama, the festival features singer-songwriter music, comedy, storytelling, and traditional Sicilian folk arts, creating a constant dialogue between artistic research and local roots.

The Teatro del Baglio

The heart of the festival is the Teatro del Baglio, a cultural venue in Villafrati housed within the Baglio Filangeri, an ancient fortified farmhouse typical of the Sicilian agricultural landscape. The setting of the baglio, with its sturdy walls and courtyard, gives the performances an intimate and evocative atmosphere, where architecture and stagecraft blend perfectly on summer nights.

Free admission and community spirit

One of the defining features of the Baglio Festival is that admission is free for all events, making it an accessible gathering for both residents and visitors and a vital cultural hub for the Palermo hinterland. Performances generally take place late in the evening, around 9:30 PM, when the summer heat gives way to the cool Sicilian night air.
