The competition celebrating young musical talent at the Teatro Garibaldi
The Avola National Music Competition is the event that, in the heart of spring, transforms the Teatro Comunale Garibaldi in Avola into a showcase for the best emerging musical talents. Promoted by the Municipality of Avola in partnership with the Hybla Mousikè Association, the competition attracts hundreds of participants every year from conservatories, music high schools, academies, and musical associations from Sicily and other Italian regions.
Established just a few years ago, the competition has grown rapidly to become one of the most anticipated events on the musical calendar of the province of Syracuse. The organizing committee, composed of professors Ivana Bordonaro, Corrada Milena Caruso, and Maria Cristina Li Gioi, has successfully given the festival a national scope, attracting young musicians from across the island and beyond. The Teatro Garibaldi, an architectural jewel of Avola, confirms itself as a venue capable of hosting emotions, culture, and growth.
The competition is divided into numerous categories covering virtually the entire spectrum of classical and chamber music:
The event spans several days: an inaugural recital opens the edition, followed by competitive auditions before the jury and a Winners' Gala that closes the festival by awarding the best performers. In addition to the prizes, the competition awards scholarships to the top overall winners and offers special recognition dedicated to inclusion and the enhancement of educational paths.
Avola, famous for its hexagonal urban layout and its prized Nero d'Avola wine, completes its cultural identity with this competition that brings classical music to its streets. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic towns in south-eastern Sicily, just a few kilometers from Noto and Syracuse, while being enveloped by the notes of young performers.
The 4th edition of the Avola National Music Competition took place from May 14 to 17, 2026, at the Teatro Comunale Garibaldi in Avola, recording approximately 250 participants from schools, music high schools, conservatories, academies, and musical associations from Sicily and across the country. The 2026 edition introduced several new features: scholarships for the top overall winners, the special Musica è Inclusione award for schools and associations committed to inclusive paths, and the new Kids category reserved for children up to 7 years old. Mayor Rossana Cannata emphasized how the Teatro Garibaldi once again proved to be a place capable of hosting emotions, culture, and growth.
The competition is held at the Teatro Comunale Garibaldi in Avola, in the historic city center, in the province of Syracuse.
Avola can be reached by car via the A18 Syracuse-Gela motorway (Avola exit) and by train on the Syracuse-Ragusa line (Avola station). The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour away.
