About Avola Music Competition

Every spring, the Teatro Comunale Garibaldi in Avola, in the province of Syracuse, welcomes hundreds of young musicians for the Avola National Music Competition. Pianists, opera singers, string and wind players, choirs, and orchestras from conservatories, music high schools, and academies across Sicily and Italy compete over three days of auditions, recitals, and award ceremonies. An event that highlights emerging talent and establishes the Avola theater as a hub for musical education in the South.

A stage for young musical talent

The Avola National Music Competition is the event that, in the heart of spring, transforms the Teatro Comunale Garibaldi in Avola into a showcase for the best emerging musical talents. Promoted by the Municipality of Avola in partnership with the Hybla Mousikè Association, the competition attracts hundreds of participants every year from conservatories, music high schools, academies, and musical associations from Sicily and other Italian regions.

A competition growing year by year

Established just a few years ago, the competition has grown rapidly to become one of the most anticipated events on the musical calendar of the province of Syracuse. The organizing committee, composed of professors Ivana Bordonaro, Corrada Milena Caruso, and Maria Cristina Li Gioi, has successfully given the festival a national scope, attracting young musicians from across the island and beyond. The Teatro Garibaldi, an architectural jewel of Avola, confirms itself as a venue capable of hosting emotions, culture, and growth.

Competition categories

The competition is divided into numerous categories covering virtually the entire spectrum of classical and chamber music:

  • Piano (soloists and duos)
  • Strings and wind instruments
  • Opera singing
  • Choirs and orchestras
  • Chamber music
  • Categories dedicated to music high schools and conservatories

Three days of music

The event spans several days: an inaugural recital opens the edition, followed by competitive auditions before the jury and a Winners' Gala that closes the festival by awarding the best performers. In addition to the prizes, the competition awards scholarships to the top overall winners and offers special recognition dedicated to inclusion and the enhancement of educational paths.

Avola and its tradition

Avola, famous for its hexagonal urban layout and its prized Nero d'Avola wine, completes its cultural identity with this competition that brings classical music to its streets. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic towns in south-eastern Sicily, just a few kilometers from Noto and Syracuse, while being enveloped by the notes of young performers.
