Two days of starry skies, written words, and ancient memories in the historic center of Paliano
The Astronomy, Literature and History Festival takes place in Paliano, a fortified town in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and inland Lazio. Launched in 2025 by the Accademia delle Stelle with the support of the Municipality of Paliano, the festival is based on a simple yet fascinating premise: observing the starry sky is not just a scientific endeavor, but a cultural phenomenon that has shaped the birth of civilizations, writing, literature, and music.
The program weaves together three threads that rarely meet on the same stage. On one hand, astronomy and astrophysics, presented by scholars who explain how the universe is measured, photographed, and interpreted. On the other, literature, with speakers tracing the presence of stars in poetry and language, from the classical world to popular forms. Finally, history and archaeoastronomy, which examine monuments, alignments, and ancient texts to uncover what past peoples already knew about the firmament.
One of the most successful aspects of the event is the choice of venues. The Teatro Esperia, in Piazza XVII Martiri, hosts the afternoon lecture series; the Giardini di Viale Garibaldi become the natural setting for evening telescope observations and outdoor workshops; the Collegiate Church of Sant'Andrea hosts the closing concert. These are complemented by the morning urban trekking, which starts from Piazza Marcantonio Colonna and winds through the medieval fabric of the town, interpreting its symbolic signs and archaeoastronomical evidence.
The practical sessions are led by the Accademia delle Stelle, a Roman association with years of experience in astronomical outreach. Evening instrumental observations allow the public to point telescopes at planets, star clusters, and deep-sky objects under the guidance of expert communicators. The practical astrophysics workshop dedicated to the spectroscope demonstrates how a star's light can reveal its chemical composition, temperature, and movement: an experience suitable for young audiences and families alike.
Each edition concludes with a musical performance. While the first edition featured a clarinet quartet from the Conservatory, the second presented the concert Beethoven and Goethe in the Collegiate Church of Sant'Andrea, dedicated to the dialogue between artistic creation and the scientific vision of the world. It is the festival's way of reinforcing its core thesis: looking at the sky is both an act of knowledge and a poetic gesture.
Paliano is just over an hour from Rome and overlooks the Sacco Valley: its location, with a wide horizon and low light pollution compared to the capital, explains the choice of venue. Attendees will find a free event, academic in level yet designed for a non-specialist audience, set in a town that preserves walls, alleys, and views of great character. It is an opportunity to combine high-quality scientific outreach, historical walks, and Ciociarian cuisine during a late June weekend.
Having expanded from a single day to a full weekend in just one year, the event is carving out a precise place in the cultural calendar of southern Lazio: small in size, ambitious in the quality of its speakers, and capable of bringing together astrophysics, classical philology, and chamber music in the same program.
In 2026, the festival organized by the Accademia delle Stelle with the Municipality of Paliano grew from one to two days. The guiding theme remained the same as the debut: the ancient bond between observing the starry sky and the development of civilizations, explored through the tools of astrophysics, archaeoastronomy, philology, and history.
On Saturday, June 27, the day opened at 10:00 AM in Piazza Marcantonio Colonna with the urban trekking tour The Sky Inside and Outside the Walls, dedicated to the town's archaeoastronomical evidence, followed from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Teatro Esperia by lectures from P. Colona, A. Lupo, L. Verderame, and L. Simeoni. At 9:30 PM, the Giardini di Viale Garibaldi hosted instrumental astronomical observations.
On Sunday, June 28, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the same gardens hosted the practical astrophysics workshop dedicated to the optical spectroscope (by reservation). The afternoon, again at the Teatro Esperia from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, was reserved for a second cycle of highly specialized talks. The closing event, at 9:00 PM in the Collegiate Church of Sant'Andrea, featured the concert Beethoven and Goethe.
Paliano can be reached by car via the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, taking the Colleferro or Anagni-Fiuggi exit and continuing for about ten kilometers on provincial roads. By train, the reference station is Colleferro-Segni-Paliano on the Rome-Cassino line, connected to the town center by local bus lines. The journey from Rome takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.
Lectures are held at the Teatro Esperia (Piazza XVII Martiri), astronomical observations and workshops at the Giardini di Viale Garibaldi, and the final concert at the Collegiate Church of Sant'Andrea. The urban trekking starts from Piazza Marcantonio Colonna.
All events are open to the public and free of charge. Reservations are required for the practical astrophysics workshop with the spectroscope due to limited seating; please call 0775 570841.
A light jacket is recommended for evening observations: at an altitude of about 470 meters, June nights in Paliano can be cool. Wear comfortable shoes for the morning urban trekking.
