The patronal feast of the mother church of Miano, in the northern suburbs of Naples

The Solemnity of the Assumption is the patronal feast of the Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo parish in Miano, a district in the northern outskirts of the Municipality of Naples, in Campania. This is not a food festival or an event built for tourism: it is the liturgical commemoration of August 15th, experienced by a community that has celebrated baptisms, weddings, and funerals in this church for generations. For many Miano families, Ferragosto begins right here, with the vigil on the evening before and the Masses the following morning.
The parish is based in the ancient mother church of Miano, one of the historic places of worship in the Neapolitan capital. Sources place its first construction likely in the 13th century, with continuous renovations up to the early 20th century; the current layout features a three-nave church with a transept topped by a dome and an apse.
The festival calendar follows the classic pattern of Neapolitan Marian solemnities, concentrated over two days. The vigil of August 14th opens in the late afternoon with the Holy Rosary, continues with the vigil Mass, and culminates in the evening with the Marian prayer vigil. On August 15th, the community gathers for the solemn Masses in the morning and late morning.
One detail captures the spirit of the feast well: in the days leading up to the solemnity, the faithful can leave a note in the church with their prayer intentions, and those notes are then burned during the Marian vigil. It is a simple, highly participatory gesture that transforms the liturgy into a collective moment of entrustment.
In Campania, August 15th is not just a day for outings: the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary remains one of the most deeply rooted observances in the popular calendar, and dozens of parishes across the city and province of Naples celebrate their patronal feast on this date. In Miano, the solemnity is complemented by that of Saint Gaetano Thiene, the district's patron saint celebrated at the beginning of August: two closely spaced events that effectively fill the hottest month of the year with community life.
Miano is located in the upper part of the city, in the northern sector of the Municipality of Naples, and is included in the 8th Deanery of the Archdiocese of Naples along with Chiaiano, Piscinola, Marianella, and Scampia. It is a territory often described only through news reports, but it retains a very active associative, parochial, and musical fabric: the Assumption parish itself hosts choral concerts and cultural initiatives open to the district throughout the year.
The Assumption feast in Miano is primarily for those seeking an authentic experience of neighborhood devotion, far from the major tourist circuits of the historic center. Those visiting Naples on Ferragosto who wish to understand how the city truly experiences this date can find a direct testimony here, in a cozy and familiar setting. Participation in the celebrations is free and open to all.
As of the update of this page, the Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo parish in Miano, in the Municipality of Naples, has not yet released the program for the 2026 Assumption Solemnity. We therefore do not provide times or appointments: the information on this page refers to the schedule observed in previous editions and does not constitute an official calendar.
The liturgical solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is fixed for August 15th throughout the Catholic Church, and it is reasonable to expect that in 2026 the Miano community will gather around that date, with the vigil celebrated the day before.
We will update this page as soon as the official program is made available.

August in Naples is hot and humid: light but respectful clothing for a place of worship is recommended, along with a supply of water. Those wishing to participate in the vigil can bring their note with prayer intentions to the church in the preceding days.
