The solidarity-focused carnival by the Comitato Folkloristico Asiglianese, featuring masks, parades, and the traditional bean stew feast.
The Asigliano Charity Carnival is one of the most cherished popular events in Asigliano Vercellese, a small town in the rice-growing plains of the Vercelli province, in the heart of Piedmont. Organized by the Comitato Folkloristico Asiglianese, this carnival is more than just a costume party: it is a dedicated charity event, where the joy of parades and dances translates into fundraising for local causes.
Unlike carnivals concentrated over a few days, the Asigliano event spans over a month, with appointments spread from mid-January to the final day in February. The calendar alternates between social gatherings and solidarity initiatives: it kicks off with the Carnival Aperitif, followed by the Children's Dance with free admission, visits to the parish oratory, the nursing home, and local schools, leading up to the masked group parades that even reach the city of Vercelli.
The most anticipated moment is the final day, which begins at dawn with the lighting of the fires at the Multifunctional Center. After the blessing, the Committee distributes gale, friciò, hot chocolate, and tea, before reaching the ritual that gives the festival its meaning: the fagiolata. The traditional bean soup, cooked in large cauldrons, is served at noon to all participants, with home delivery available for those unable to reach the square. It is the signature dish of the Vercelli carnival, a symbol of sharing and hospitality.
Part of the network of carnivals in the Vercelli province, the Asigliano Carnival is a wonderful opportunity to discover the authentic and generous side of Piedmontese water-way villages, where popular celebration becomes an act of community.
Asigliano Vercellese is located in the rice-growing plains south of Vercelli, in Piedmont. By car, it can be reached via the A26 motorway (Vercelli Est or Borgo Vercelli exits) or the A4 Turin-Milan motorway. The nearest train station is Vercelli, on the Turin-Milan line, from where you can continue by car or bus.
The main events are held at the Asigliano Multifunctional Center and in the streets and squares of the village; some parades reach the center of Vercelli.
Many events offer free admission (such as the Children's Dance and the lighting of the fires); the Carnival Aperitif requires a reservation.
