The Asciano Contrade Market is the event that, every June 2nd for Republic Day, transforms the historic center of Asciano into a vibrant festival space. Promoted by the Associazione Contrade di Asciano APS, the organization behind the famous Palio dei Ciuchi, the event weaves together craftsmanship, flavors, culture, and music, capturing the authentic atmosphere of a Tuscan village nestled among the rolling clay hills of the Crete Senesi, in the province of Siena.

The Treno Natura and the arrival of visitors

The market has always been linked to the passage of the Treno Natura, the historic steam train that travels along the Crete Senesi railway and stops at the Asciano station. The train's arrival around noon brings numerous travelers and slow-tourism enthusiasts to the village, who join the visitors arriving for the festivities. It is one of the most evocative aspects of the event: the whistle of the steam engine announcing the train's arrival in the fairytale landscape of the Crete.

The market and food stalls

From the early morning hours, the village streets fill with stalls offering handicrafts and local products: handmade creations, regional specialties, and farm-to-table goods. At lunchtime, the food stall at the Arena Italia opens, where you can savor traditional local dishes in a convivial atmosphere.

Culture, music, and tradition

The day offers numerous cultural and entertainment initiatives:

• A preview of the historical pageant, showcasing the identity of the Asciano contrade and their Palio dei Ciuchi;
• The « La strada dell'anima » walk along the ancient Via Lauretana, the pilgrimage route that crosses the Crete (fee required, reservation needed);
• Roaming music with street bands animating the city center;
• Games in the square and workshops for children and families, including an activity dedicated to the world of bees;
• A recital by students of the Music School of the Società Filarmonica « G. Verdi » of Asciano, in Piazza Garibaldi.

Museums open

For the occasion, the Palazzo Corboli Museum and the Cassioli Museum will remain open with continuous hours, along with the model railway exhibition, a perfect thematic setting for a day that also celebrates the historic railway of the Crete.
