The village returns to the Middle Ages at the foot of the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle
For a weekend in June, the historic center of Bracciano, in the heart of the Lazio region and just a few kilometers from the lake of the same name, travels back in time by centuries. Arts and Crafts - Medieval Bracciano is the historical re-enactment that brings the squares and alleys of the village to life, dominated by the imposing Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Italy. Costumed performers, artisan workshops, and traditional games immerse visitors of all ages in the evocative atmosphere of a medieval village.
The competitive heart of the event is the Palio of the Bracciano Districts, a challenge between the city's two historic quarters: Rione Cartiere and Rione Monti. The districts face off in trials rooted in popular tradition, from tug-of-war to historical archery, as well as tests of strength and skill. At the end of the competitions, the winning district claims the coveted title amidst the cheers of supporters and the enthusiasm of the crowd.
The program features a mix of costumed processions, performances, and entertainment for all ages. Among the most anticipated guests are the Flag-wavers of San Gemini, the Swordsmen of Soriano, and street performers including jugglers, puppeteers, and fire shows. Historical processions, musicians, and jesters accompany the public through the streets of the village, recreating the sounds and colors of a bygone era.
Along the streets of the historic center, ancient craft workshops come to life, where artisans demonstrate skills and techniques passed down through the centuries, while an authentic military encampment reconstructs life in the field. The food stalls, managed by the districts between Piazza Mazzini and the Belvedere del Torrione, offer traditional dishes and complete an experience that engages all the senses.
Organized by the La Compagnia del Castello association with the patronage of the Lazio Region and the Municipality of Bracciano (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital), the event is completely free to attend. It is an ideal opportunity for a day trip from Rome, combining the magic of historical re-enactment with the discovery of the castle and the stunning Lake Bracciano.
