In Arlena di Castro, a small town in the province of Viterbo nestled in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia, Carnival isn't just a winter affair. The Summer Carnival is the event that traditionally closes the season of village festivals in mid-August. Masks, costumes, and plenty of music bring the carefree spirit of Carnival to the village streets in a unique summer version, all under the starry sky of the Viterbo countryside.
This event marks the conclusion of a long calendar of summer festivities in Arlena di Castro that run throughout August: from the famous Lombrichello Festival, dedicated to the local handmade pasta, to the Taste Village featuring gastronomic specialties, dancing, and evening entertainment, all the way to the celebrations for the patron saint San Rocco with the Palio delle Contrade. The Summer Carnival is the grand finale that bids summer goodbye and unites locals and vacationers in one last big collective party.
The evening takes place in the historic center and the town squares, brought to life by music, entertainment, and the participation of adults and children in costume. The atmosphere is typical of the Tuscia village festivals: simple, warm, and deeply rooted in local tradition, where fun comes from sharing and a sense of community. It is a perfect occasion for families, with a dedicated space for children and games.
Arlena di Castro sits among the rolling volcanic hills of the Viterbo area, a region rich in history, nature, and farming traditions. The village is part of the territory of the ancient Duchy of Castro and preserves an authentic identity tied to its festivals and popular gatherings. Attending the Summer Carnival means discovering a genuine corner of Lazio, far from the main tourist flows, and experiencing the hospitality of a community that loves to celebrate.
Organized by the Municipality of Arlena di Castro together with the Pro Loco and local associations, the Summer Carnival is free to enter and open to everyone. A convivial occasion that, amidst masks and music, offers an evening of joy to anyone wishing to end their summer in the spirit of tradition and fun.
The Arlena di Castro Summer Carnival returns in the summer of 2026 as the concluding event of the village's festival calendar. Awaiting the official announcement, an evening of music, masks, and joy is expected in the historic center, open to residents and visitors alike.
Arlena di Castro is located in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio Tuscia. By car, it can be reached from the Via Aurelia (SS1) by taking the exit towards the hinterland at Montalto di Castro or Tarquinia, or from Viterbo along the provincial roads. The nearest train station is in Montalto di Castro on the Tyrrhenian line.
The event takes place in the historic center of the village and is generally free of charge.
As it is a summer evening, light clothing is recommended. For updated dates and programs, it is best to check the channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Arlena di Castro.
