About Argentine Dance Slam Grand Final

Every spring, Rome's Club Porteño hosts the Grand Final of the Argentine Dance Slam Circuit, the concluding event of the Italian DanceSport Tour promoted by Promodanza ASC. Over eighty athletes from across Italy compete in tango, vals, and milonga before a national jury. With unified categories and classes, this "open" competition crowns the Absolute Champions and the "Champion of Champions" of the season. At the end of the day, the competition gives way to an evening milonga, where athletes and the public dance together until late at night.

Argentine tango becomes a sport in the Portuense district

The Grand Final of the Argentine Dance Slam Circuit is the annual closing event of the Italian DanceSport Tour, the national ranking circuit for Argentine dances promoted by Promodanza ASC. It takes place in the Municipality of Rome, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Lazio Region, at the Club Porteño on Via Portuense 543, one of the historic tango venues in the Portuense district.

This is not just another milonga: here, tango is a recognized sport with judges, classes, scores, and rankings. Yet, the atmosphere remains as warm and engaging as the traditional porteña halls, because once the competition ends, the dance floor is open to everyone.

How the circuit works

The Argentine Dance Slam Circuit, which inherited the legacy of the former CIDS Italian Cup, consists of three national stages held across the country throughout the competitive season. To enter the general ranking, each couple must participate in at least two out of three stages: the scores are added together to determine the final ranking.

  • Specialties: tango, vals, and milonga, with the addition of tango escenario for the higher classes.
  • Categories: Under 50 and Over 50.
  • Classes: D (introductory), C, B, A, and A/S, the latter reserved for high-level competition.
  • For each discipline, couples perform three tracks per competition round.

The winning couples of each category and class (C, B, A, A/S) gain direct access to the Grand Final, which is held with unified classes: an "open" formula that puts competitors of different levels on the floor side-by-side, making the contest particularly spectacular.

A competition day in Rome

The Grand Final takes place over a single Saturday afternoon. Athlete registration opens the doors of the Club Porteño in the early afternoon, followed immediately by the elimination rounds for tango, vals, and milonga, which run continuously until the finals. The venue typically hosts over eighty athletes from all over Italy, accompanied by teachers, coaches, and supporters.

The most anticipated moment is the evening awards ceremony, where the Absolute Champions of each specialty and the so-called "Champion of Champions" are proclaimed, alongside awards for the national circuit's general ranking.

The "Sport Edition" Milonga

Once the awards are handed out, the evening changes pace: the room transforms into a milonga and stays open until late at night, with music selected by a tango DJ. This is the moment when competitive tension melts away, and the Argentine tango community in Italy comes together to dance without judgment, just as the Rioplatense tradition dictates.

Why it is worth attending

For those outside the scene, the Grand Final is a rare opportunity to see the best of Italian competitive tango concentrated in just a few hours: the precision of the embrace, the elegance of the vals with its continuous turns, and the rhythmic playfulness of the milonga. It is also a great way to understand how deeply rooted the porteña culture has become in Rome, where schools and associations like A.S.D. Tanguedia train dancers who compete in Italian and European championships.

Admission for the public is affordable, and booking is required as the venue's capacity is limited: it is best to plan a few days in advance.

Argentine Dance Slam Grand Final — edition 2026

On Saturday, May 23, 2026, the Club Porteño at Via Portuense 543 in Rome hosted the Grand Final of the Argentine Dance Slam Circuit, the final act of the 2025-2026 Italian DanceSport Tour promoted by Promodanza ASC. Over eighty athletes from all over Italy competed in tango, vals, and milonga with unified categories and classes, in the "open" formula that awards the titles of Absolute Champions. In the evening, the awards ceremony and the proclamation of the "Champion of Champions" took place, followed by a milonga until late at night.

The 2026 Grand Final

The 2026 edition of the Slam Grand Final was held in a single day at the Club Porteño in Rome, closing a circuit that started in January. The three qualifying stages visited Rome (January 10, Club Porteño), Busto Arsizio in the province of Varese (February 21, Divina Commedia), and Rende in the Cosenza area (April 11, Memorial Celestina Muto).

The winning couples of the tour's C, B, A, and A/S categories and classes gained direct access to the final. On the floor, the three classic Argentine dance specialties—tango, vals, and milonga—were performed with unified classes, a formula that made the competition particularly open.
