About Rassegna Licodia Eubea

In Licodia Eubea, a charming village in the Iblei Mountains near Catania, the Archaeological Communication and Cinema Festival brings archaeology to the big screen every year. Documentaries, short films, and feature films from around the globe explore the ancient world through visual arts, accompanied by discussions with archaeologists, directors, and scholars. This international, free-admission festival has been bridging the gap between scientific research and cinematic language since 2011.

The festival that brings archaeology to the cinema

The Archaeological Communication and Cinema Festival is an international film event dedicated to popularizing the ancient world through visual arts. Established in 2011, it takes place in Licodia Eubea, a picturesque village in the Iblei Mountains in the province of Catania, Sicily, and is organized by the Archeovisiva Cultural Association ETS. In recent years, the festival has adopted a dual-venue format, opening in Catania before concluding in the historic center of Licodia Eubea.

Cinema, research, and outreach

The heart of the event is a selection of films—documentaries, short films, and feature films—from all over the world, many of which are national premieres. The goal is to bring the general public closer to archaeology and its figures, making the ancient world more accessible and fascinating. Screenings are complemented by meetings with directors, archaeologists, and scholars, as well as conferences, workshops, and guided tours of the Iblei territory's heritage.

Festival awards

The festival presents several awards that reflect its dual nature, both scientific and cinematic:

  • ArcheoVisiva Award, granted by an international jury to the film that best combines scientific rigor with cinematic value;
  • "Città di Licodia Eubea" Award, the audience choice award;
  • "Antonino Di Vita" Award, dedicated to those who contribute to the dissemination of cultural heritage knowledge;
  • "Studenti UniCt" Award, voted on by students of the University of Catania for the best short film.

An Iblei village turned into a film set

The festival finds its home in the Municipality of Licodia Eubea, particularly at the Polo Culturale della Badia, a setting that blends landscape, history, and hospitality. The event is supported by the Sicily Film Commission and the Municipality of Licodia Eubea, with the patronage of the Municipality of Catania and the collaboration of the University of Catania. Admission to the screenings is free, reflecting the project's commitment to education and public engagement.

Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers; traditionally, the festival takes place between late autumn and early winter, featuring a dual-venue format between Catania and the Polo Culturale della Badia in Licodia Eubea. The program, including the film selection and guests, will be announced on the official website and the festival's social media channels.
