The Carnival of an Arbëreshë Village

Barile, in the Vulture area of the province of Potenza, is one of the Arbëreshë villages of Basilicata: a community of Albanian origin that has preserved its own language, rites, and traditions for centuries. Here, Carnival also takes on special characteristics, blending the Italian folk festival with the Arbëreshë cultural heritage.

Masks and Folk Tradition

In Arbëreshë communities, Carnival is marked by ancient masks and rites, with groups of costumed figures animating the village streets with traditional songs, dances, and disguises. In Barile, the festival involves the entire community in a joyful atmosphere that precedes Lent and opens the long season of rites, from the Bonfire of Saint Joseph to the Way of the Cross during Holy Week.

Atmosphere and Local Context

Promoted with the support of the Municipality of Barile and local associations, Carnival is one of the social highlights of the Vulture village. It is also an opportunity to rediscover the Arbëreshë identity of Barile, one of the few Albanian-speaking communities in Basilicata, in a region famous for its Aglianico del Vulture wine and its cave dwellings carved into tuff rock.
