About Appia Joy Family Fest

Located at Appia Joy Park, between the Park of the Aqueducts and the Appia Antica Park, the Appia Joy Family Fest launches the autumn season of the Butterfly House with a weekend dedicated entirely to families. Nature, play, and entertainment blend together among the tropical greenhouse inhabited by hundreds of butterflies, creative workshops for children, live performances, and street food areas, in one of the most surprising green oases in the southeast of Rome.

A festive weekend at the gates of the Appia Antica

The Appia Joy Family Fest is the weekend event that, every autumn, brings the Appia Joy Park in Rome to life. Located in the Quarto Miglio district, just a stone's throw from the Park of the Aqueducts and the Appia Antica Park, the festival coincides with the seasonal reopening of the Butterfly House, the tropical greenhouse that serves as the park's heart. Inaugurated with a grand day dedicated to families, the result is a hybrid event, somewhere between a neighborhood festival and an open-air theme park, where children are the true stars.

The Butterfly House, the heart of the event

Inside the heated greenhouse, hundreds of butterflies from South America, Asia, and Africa fly freely among exotic plants, water features, and feeding stations. A guided tour takes visitors through the nursery, where it is possible to observe caterpillars, chrysalises, and hatchings up close, while biologists and entomologists explain the life cycle of these insects and their role as pollinators. Alongside the butterflies, you will find stick insects, leaf insects, and other small inhabitants that children can discover with the help of the staff. The experience is designed to be accessible and inclusive: in past seasons, guided tours in Italian Sign Language have also been offered.

Games, shows, and flavors

Around the greenhouse, the opening weekend brings the entire park to life. The event program includes:

  • traditional games and outdoor recreational activities for children and teenagers;
  • dinosaur walks along the park's permanent exhibition path;
  • live shows, juggling, and roaming entertainment;
  • creative workshops and professional face painting;
  • agri-food markets featuring local products;
  • street food areas and refreshment points, with DJ sets in the evening.

The park also offers its permanent attractions: the adventure park with suspended tree-top courses, the playground for younger children, the fitness trail, the community garden, and the botanical paths that wind through the Roman countryside.

A green oasis in the heart of the Capital

Appia Joy Park is an inclusive, multifunctional park created to bring Roman families back into contact with nature without leaving the city. Its location, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region, makes it an ideal starting point for a day that combines celebration with the discovery of one of Italy's most famous archaeological landscapes: the Roman aqueducts and the path of the Regina Viarum are just a few minutes' walk away.

Why it's worth the trip

Compared to the large events in the historic center, the Appia Joy Family Fest has the advantage of scale: wide spaces, a relaxed pace, affordable prices, and a predominantly local audience. It is the perfect opportunity to introduce children to a natural environment reconstructed with scientific care and, at the same time, to spend a few hours outdoors in one of Rome's greenest areas, just as the summer heat gives way to the clear days of late September.
